Danes will still have short bench vs. Rider

--staff writer

ALBANY ? UAlbany coach Will Brown says that this is certain: junior guard Logan Aronhalt and sophomore forward Luke Devlin won?t play in the Danes? BracketBuster game against Rider on Saturday at SEFCU Arena. Both players are battling knee injuries.

Gerardo Suero, the team?s leading scorer, could play. But he might not.

Suero missed Wednesday?s 50-47 home loss against Vermont because he had a case of the shingles. He was re-evaluated on Friday and is no longer contagious, but that doesn?t mean he?ll play against the Broncs (11-17) of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

?(Suero?s) fever has broke, but he is still in some pain,? Brown said before the Danes practiced at SEFCU Arena Friday afternoon.

One good thing is that, even though this is the last regular season home game, the competition is not against an America East team. In all liklihood, the Danes will finish in fourth place in the league and then head to the America East Tournament in Hartford in two weeks.

That will give the three banged up players time to heal.

?If this (Rider) was a battle for the America East championship, I think (Suero) would crawl on the court,? Brown said. ?If we are going to have success in the tournament, we need a Gerardo Suero who is 100 percent and feeling good about himself.?

It was originally thought that Devlin had a dislocated left kneecap, but his injury, which came in the first half of the Vermont game, was diagnosed as a contustion. Brown said he won?t play against Rider.

?I?m not going to play if it?s going to mean aggravating the injury,? Devlin said.

Aronhalt has what may be the most serious injury. He has a chronic condition in his right knee that will require surgery at the end of the season. The knee has gotten weaker and weaker as the season has gone on.

He tried playing on it against Vermont, but only could go nine minutes, and was ineffective.

?I really couldn?t do anything,? said Aronhalt, the Danes? second leading scorer. ?Right now, I just don?t know.?

He hopes to be back for the regular season finale at Binghamton and hopes even more that he can be as close to full strength as possible for the tournament.

Danes will be really short against Rider

February 18, 2012 at 6:43 pm by Tim Wilkin, staff writer

ALBANY ? The University at Albany basketball team already knew they were going to be short-handed against Rider in Saturday?s BracketBuster game at SEFCU Arena.

Well, as it turns out, they are going to be REALLY short-handed.

Starting forward Luke Devlin (knee), and starting guards Logan Aronhalt (knee) and Gerardo Suero (shingles) won?t play. And, it was announced a few minutes ago that backup guard Ralph Watts won?t play either. He injured a hamstring in Friday?s practice.

That leaves the Danes with seven players who will dress: Mike Black and Jacob Iati will start at guard, and Blake Metcalf, John Puk and Jayson Guerrier will likely play up front. The only active players on the bench will be freshmen Sam Rowley and Tanner Gibson.
