Flyers playing rough in practices, workouts
Injured center James Cripe might not be available to the University of Dayton basketball team until after the first of the year.
Cripe, who hurt his left hip during a workout on the morning of the Cincinnati game (Dec. 4), had an MRI examination on Monday. Coach Brian Gregory reported the test showed no tear, no structural damage ? just a large hematoma.
"It's basically a bruise," Gregory said. "They just have to work that out. He has improved greatly over the last two or three days in terms of his flexibility."
Gregory said he was told such an injury requires 3 to 4 weeks to heal, which means the 6-foot-11 sophomore could miss all four games during the Christmas holidays. He has been on the shelf for three games already.
"Now that we know there is no structural damage, we can be a little more aggressive with the rehab," Gregory said. Cripe is lifting weights to maintain his strength but cannot practice.
Two other Flyers also were held out of Wednesday's practice because of injuries suffered in Tuesday's workout. Junior guard Logan White received treatment for an injured left shoulder, and freshman center Chris Alvarez did not participate in any contact drills while allowing some stitches on his nose to heal.
Alvarez broke his nose when he banged into the back of teammate Warren Williams' head. He received some stitches and saw a specialist on Wednesday. He reported to practice with a black eye.
The Flyers, who are in the midst of final exams, took Sunday and Monday off after Saturday's victory against Texas Southern.
Gregory said the daily practice is a good break from studying and test-taking. He noted that preparation for final exams is another aspect of college life new to the seven Flyer freshmen.
Dayton plays at Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers return by chartered flight immediately after the game to begin preparing for a Monday night game against Northwestern State of Louisiana. Akron visits next Thursday before the Flyers take a short Christmas break.
