I know absolutely nothing about horse racing, but I have a buddy who is going to the Derby, and I would like to place a few small wagers. Which horse is a good one (at decent odds) to throw a few bucks on? And what might be a winning trifecta?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is perhaps the most wide open derby field in the history of this great race. I am betting Imperialism simply because he should be close to 20-1 and I know that he can get the distance. While I may play a couple of exactas, hitting the trifecta will be nearly impossible due to the depth of a very large field.

Just pick a horse, toss a few bucks on him to win and place and enjoy the day.

I'm going to box the Dual Qualifers. That is the ones that have had a race in the last 30 days.

#3 Lion Heart
#4 Action this Day
#11 The Cliff's Edge

I'm also going to play some combos with those 3 and Castledale, Tapit, and Borrego.

Probably will take the favor Cliff's Edge, but I defintaely like Pollard's Vision at 20-1 to place as well. there is a ton of money to make in a field like this....

good luck

Spang, personally I can`t believe a 21 year old girl with her first entry, will win the Kentucky Derby with a horse that broke its maiden in a 25000 dollar claimer. Too much of a cinderella story for me. Besides i can`t bet on someone who is 21 and has never had a drink.:D

Good luck to you anyway. I`m still confused and may bet the five best jockeys that I prefer and to hell with trying to handicap the horses.

Have good day Saturday.

Skanoochies, Your point is very valid. I am just taking a flyer. Just like the fact that he should love the extra distance.

This race is so wide open that nearly anybody could win. Your point about the jocks is also a good one because the winner will need to avoid traffic problems and enjoy a clean trip.

I'll bet the tri pays about 2-3 K
