President George W. Bush, seen here on a fishing boat with his father on Friday off the coast of Kennebunkport, Maine, called Saturday for patience as U.S. forces conduct stepped-up operations in Iraq.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) ? President Bush, who faces mounting congressional pressure to end the war, called Saturday for patience as U.S. forces conduct stepped-up operations in Iraq.
"We're still at the beginning of this offensive, but we're seeing some hopeful signs,

" Bush said in his weekly radio address, in which he likened U.S. troops deployed around the globe to the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

"We're engaging the enemy, and killing or capturing hundreds," said Bush, who is losing GOP support for his decision in January to send 30,000 extra troops to Iraq to secure Baghdad and Anbar.

The president said two senior al-Qaeda leaders were killed this week north of Baghdad and U.S. troops are finding arms caches at more than three times the rate of a year ago. Despite an upward trend in May, sectarian murders in the Iraqi capital are down from January, Bush said.

He said the last of the U.S. reinforcements just arrived in Iraq earlier this month.

The White House thought it had until September, when military commanders are to give an assessment of Iraq. But most senators now believe troops should start coming home within the next few months, and House Republicans are calling to revive the independent Iraq Study Group to give the nation new options.

"The fight in Iraq has been tough, and it will remain difficult," Bush said.

He said the Fourth of July on Wednesday will be an opportunity to remember the nation's founders as well as the more than 3,568 men and women of the U.S. military who have died in the Iraq war.

"We remember the spirit of liberty that led men from 13 different colonies to gather in Philadelphia and pen the Declaration of Independence," said Bush, who plans to spend Independence Day with the West Virginia Air National Guard in Martinsburg, W.Va.

"Today, a new generation of Americans has stepped forward and volunteered to defend the ideals of our nation's founding. ... They've helped bring freedom to the Iraqi people," he said. "They've helped make Americans more secure. We will not forget their sacrifice."

President Bush went fishing on Friday, relaxing with his dad before his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Bush family estate.

Secret Service officers in patrol boats trailed the Bushes as they sped by the shoreline. The president took off his hat and waved to photographers and returned a salute to onlookers on shore. Bush cast his line, hooked with a bait fish, a couple dozen times without luck. Soon after their speedboat, Fidelity III, with the senior Bush at the wheel, motored off so they could try a different angling spot.

The president's great-grandfather built the Bush estate at Walker's Point, a rocky strip of land that juts into the Atlantic Ocean.

Our President said, we are still in the beginning of the offensive. I know the guys on the right will be smarting when they read this. Our President sounds delusional, I can't blame him. If I was as wrong about Iraq as he has been I would hope and pray for a miracle to. It's just not going to happen. He has to pull the cord and go to plan B. HELLO : Plan A didn't work. We see people in all walks of life, fall into this trap all the time. They don't know when to say when, back up and take a different approach. I'm not saying don't fight terror, I'm say pull back and live to fight another day. Some of us smart gamblers understand this concept. This is a classic case of beating ones head against a wall , all he has to do to stop the bleeding is, open his eyes and smell reality. This is ridiculous. We are a Country at war and the American peoples approval rate of this republican president and this democratic congress is < 30%. You would think in a time of war we could rally behind our leaders. We have no leadership on either side of the isle. You would think in a time of war we as a Country would come together. I think the AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE UNITED BUT ARE POLITICIANS ARE UNITED AGAINST US ! More than 70% of our people do not trust this president or house and senate. That crosses party lines. The sad thing is, no matter who wins the election; it's still going to be us against them.
