So was he a heartless lazy in the classroom punk when Pete Carroll recruited him or did he become that way after Pete became his coach?
If I remember correctly, Manual Wright needed to take the SAT multiple times to qualify for USC. So I assume he was lazy in the classroom prior to coming to USC and Carroll was aware of that. Often athletes struggle or are lazy in high school but do better in college after putting effort into their studies. Classic example was Junior Seau. He had horrible grades and did not qualify for USC and this was when USC was not so academic. USC accepted Seau as "partial qualifier" (which USC does not allow anymore) and since day 1 I think Seau not only stayed eligible but excelled in his studies at USC. Good story! Seau might not be the person and player he is today if USC did not accept him as partial qualifier. I assume he struggled in high school academically because he did not put in the effort.
Carroll needed to take the risk on Wright because USC did not have a lot of talent at the time. Now USC has a boat load of talent and Carroll can be very selective in who he wants and what risks he wants to take with players and academics.

If what Saban is doing is what the kid needs why didnt Pete Carroll do it? Of course, rather than fessing up you will spin.
What did you want Carroll to do? What more could Carroll do? Manual Wright was not a starter at USC. He was not good enough to start at DT for USC but was talented enough to be drafted by Miami. Did you not read what I posted above? Manual Wright had the key sack against Aron Rogers on 3rd and 10 from the USC 10. He ran down Rogers from behind and sacked him for 2-3 yard loss and forced 4th down. Without that play and Manual Wright, USC might not have won a National Championship. So I think Carroll got very good production from Wright for only being a soph. and a 2nd string DT. I will repeat myself. MANUAL WRIGHT WAS NOT A STARTER AT USC! USC did not depend on Manual Wright and I think he only played 1 down against OU in the BCS National Championship game. (due to injury)
BTW, Wright was in MUCH better shape last year at USC vs now in Miami training camp. He was not part of the USC conditioning program this year. If Wright qualified academically, he would be part of the USC conditioning program AND Wright would be competing for a starting job at DT. Something Wright has never earned in his 2 years at USC! Just look at his gut now and his gut while playing for USC last year. Huge difference! No excuses for Wright to come out of shape to Miami camp but that is Sabans problem and I am glad to see him do something about it. The result might be Wright crying but also Miami getting a super talented DT reaching his potential stardum. Don't forget Wright wanted to play for USC this year and wanted no part of the NFL. Failing to qualify academically forced Wright to choose the NFL vs sitting out a year.
