I remember being in eight grade and a bunch of students would line up against the curb and pitch quarters against the side of the building. Some times we had like 10 or more kids pitching at the same time so when you got your quarter the closest to the curb you would collect like 2.50. I remember telling myself day after day I was going to go out and enjoy recess for a change and not have the pressure of pitching quarters, but some how.... some way..... I was always drawn back to the pitching game. I got to be pretty good at it and always had lots of quarters in my pockets after the recess ended.

I don't know if there is a specific gene for gambling, but there is a certain genetic disposition towards addiction, and I think gambling falls in there. I'm not saying that everyone who gambles is addicted, I just think certain personality types who are most likely to have addictive personalities are more likely to be gamblers. Just because someone has the genetic predisposition to be a gambler, does not mean they will be. I think that environment is the key piece to the puzzle. If you grew up watching your parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, friends gambling, you are more likely to pick up the habit. I think that is the most important aspect. I would think most everyone here grew up experiencing/viewing gambling in some sort, even if it's as simple as a parent playing the lottery or buying a scratch-off.

Just my 2c.

I could not agree more. I watched my Grandpa and Dad wager since I started watching sports. Eventually I started handicapping with my Dad and watched games with him. Handicapping obviously got me interested in watching football all day on Saturdays. Def. made games more entertaining.

Interesting thing is I have changed somewhat. I do not find myself gambling as much for the action/thrill, but more so to make money. I used to always bet on all tv games and just bet to have action. I grew out of that. I am a lot more selective now.

My father is about the biggest non gambling person I know. Same goes for my mother and brothers. My grandparents passed away pretty young but never heard anything about their love of gambling. So I pretty much blame it on winning $25 on bingo when I was 11 years old. Goddamn gambler's optimism.

I wonder the same thing, although i have never know my dad to have gambled (cept marrying my mom :D ) but his father won a house in Topeka KS back in the 30s, no kidding a house, then in 1987 i won enough on the Giants-Denver superbowl to make a down payment on my house. good question.

Peace,

yes it is, all my parents and grandparents are big cardplayers. My mom really likes to gamble. My dad never bet on sports, but my brothers and I bet on everything. Wednesday is bowling night, had 720 last week, so I made out pretty good. Here's undeniable proof, went to a Cavs-Bulls game with my family about a month ago. Placed a bet on the Bulls ML for my 90 year old Grandmother. No shit. They lost. My grandma also loves having pool #'s for bowl games. So, yes, I'd say it's genetic.

Not sure if its genetic but everyone seems to like to gamble.

I do remember the rush at a very young age of playing poker
or anything we could bet on.

One time I was working on this job and a bunch of us started throwing quarters to the line everyday. I would win 10 or 15 bucks sometimes and I thought it was great fun.

Then one day we were right in the middle of a good game and the Branch Manager walked in on us. I had just thrown the winning quarter, and when I saw him I just walked down and picked up all the money and acted like nothing happened.

He called me into his office and said gambling could not be tolerated. I said Oh yeh well you just handed out a football
pick card and carried it around yourself collecting money.

That ended that, but needless to say there was no more throwing quarters after that episode.

Neither of my parents nor any relatives that I can think of ever gambled, neither did/does my wife, she hates it and I didn't start till after we were married 3-4 years, guess I'm the exception. The wife hates it less and less considering I usually give her the lion's share of the winnings when I come home from the track which is where I wager most of all, now and then when she wants money for something she asks me to go to the track, go figure.

Im not so sure that it is as much genetic but more directly influenced by the social setting that you grow up in. My father has for over 30 years published a yearly college football magazine that focuses on angles and trends and team predictions and he also is involved as a mediator for the steel union. So I can recall from an early age being at the labor hall or a steel mill bar where football betting was always a topic and parlay sheets flew around like they were todays newspaper, my older brother grew up in the same environment but he doesnt even play the lottery.
