Okay, I am getting some pressure from the wife to buy another dog in the very near future. We currently have a three year old German Shepard that my wife and daughters have turned into the biggest sissy in the dog kindom. My wife thinks that we need a big dog that will protect them when i go away on Engineering projects since the Shepard will never be that type of dog. Anyone have any suggestions on what type of breed that I should be focusing on? I would like the dog to be a threat to crooks, but also be a dog that will be a good family dog especially arounds my kids. I had Boxers for many years and they are fantastic dogs, but I dont think they are very inimidating. I would appreciate any suggestions especially from people that have had a large breed dog.

Damn Scott, that dog scares the shit out of me just looking at it. Im not too sure that would be a good dog to have around kids, but no one is going to fuck with you if you have that beast. Is it a Pit Bull?

I have a Great Dane(105 lbs) and a St Bernard ( puppy) :scared

The dane is great with all dogs and people and creates quite a fuss whenever somebody approaches the home. We took him to classes as a puppy and he's a wonderful animal.

I couldn't recommend a Great Dane enough to anybody looking for a large breed dog.

I dont know MC, my 2 shepherds are both over 100 lbs and friendly/playful as can be, but I would pity the fool that would try to enter my place without me being present. Just the bark alone and the sheer size of them I would think might be enought to discredit someone from trying to enter. I mean the FedEx or UPS guys shit themselves when they deliver here.

Its a presa canario

The German shepard would be in trouble fast.

Its not a kids dog but can be trained as a puppy into the pack.

I have two of them at my shop. I feed them chickens.

just bored and popped into the general forum for the first time ever in my history of ever browsing madjacks (10yrs+) and I gotta agree with jr here... I mean obv u know your dog better than we do but even the most friendly shepherd should be able to deter an intruder...

why not just get another shepherd? they're the best imo

FCP,

I will have to check into Great Danes since I know very little about the breed.

JR,

I bought the Shepard because I thought it would be a good watch dog, but between my wife and daughters they have feminized the dog. The dog runs around wearing dresses and ballet skirts.

Scott,

That dog looks like a Boxer on steriods, damn is that thing scary. I love the tough guy look that dog shows.

Ace, Ton and Schlep

I love Shepards, so I may think about another one! I have never had a Lab, but I thought they required alot of exercise which might not happen when I go out on jobs and no one wants to excerise the fog. Rotts, I need to look at them closer, as I dont know much about them. I just watched Dogs101 and really liked the breed called Leonbergers.

Understood, but don't you think any dog you might get regardless of breed might turn into tinkerbell, especially if you arent around much at the beginning. One can turn a puppy from any breed into pretty much what you want it to be with/out training classes. If you do get another large breed dog, I would tend to think anyone knowing/seeing this might utilize caution not knowing the demeanor of such big dogs in the house. Think about, and do a role reversal, if you or I or anyone here were the ones trying to break into a house, and if we saw this or heard the bark have think um next house and not take the chance.

I have my friends over for every UFC fight, and it is a free for all as the dogs love the attention and play all night with every stinking soft ball in the house (no more tennis balls because they pop them), but no way one of those guys would come in here by themselves, especially through a window or something.

Good luck with the search, I can honestly say there is nothing better than owing 2 dogs, keep each company and entertain or chase each other outside, makes my life easier, but they do eat more than I do every do so a little pricey.
