RALEIGH, N.C. -- Guard Scooter Sherrill's ``gay'' remark about Duke star J.J. Redick was ``uncharacteristic and unfortunate,'' North Carolina State athletic director Lee Fowler said Friday.
In a statement, Fowler said Sherrill had apologized for Thursday's comment. Top-ranked Duke and the No. 21 Wolfpack play Sunday.
``As Scooter said in the interview, he has great respect for J.J. Redick and certainly meant no offense to anyone by his remarks,'' Fowler said.
At N.C. State's practice facility, Sherrill was asked why opposing crowds seem to target the Blue Devils' sophomore guard.
Sherrill said Redick ``has a little bit of cockiness to him'' and noted that Redick holds his hand in the follow-through position after making a shot, while dropping back on defense.
``You see him hit a 3, and he's running down the court hollering. He's got his hand up like he's gay or something,'' Sherrill said, then laughed.
Sherrill later said he was just trying to get in Redick's head before Sunday's game.
``Coach (Herb) Sendek has met with Scooter about his comments, and Scooter regrets what he said and wishes to apologize to anyone who was offended,'' Fowler said.
Redick scored 20 points in the Blue Devils' 76-57 win at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 15
