For those that didnt see it, Cubs manager Dusty Baker said the following this week:

---------------
"It's easier for most Latin guys and it's easier for most minority people because most of us come from heat. You don't find too many brothers in New Hampshire and Maine and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Right?" he said with a chuckle.

"We were brought over here for the heat, right? Isn't that history? Weren't we brought over because we could take the heat?"

"Your skin color is more conducive to heat than it is to the lighter-skinned people. I don't see brothers running around burnt," Baker said before the Cubs beat St. Louis at Wrigley. "That's a fact. I'm not making this up. I'm not seeing some brothers walking around with some white stuff on their ears and noses."
-------------

Wouldnt a white manager be instantly fired for saying something like this? Wouldnt he at least get a swift suspension from Bud Selig's office? What a complete and total load of shit.

Somehow when minority managers want to make racist comments about minorities and non-minorities, I guess thats OK. Am I the only one that thinks that if Grady Little (Forrest Gump-like Red Sox manager) said in his Southern drawl "Yeah us white folks aint very good in the heat, but those black folks, they sure are good" he would be gone the next day?

The old double standard. Could you imagine a football coach saying that his players of color don't play so well in the cold!

I should also add I am insulted as a New Hampshire native because my game only gets better as the temperature gets hotter.

Hey he also was heard to say the Presidents trip to Africa was a vote geting trip. Trying to look real good to all the blacks back here in the USA. Baker might have that right.

DJV, we know you're a liberal and despise Bush, so you don't have to interject that into every thread on here.

I don't see too much wrong with that statement. I guess if the point is that if a white manager said it, he would be in trouble, u might have something there, I'm not sure. The PC police would probably be all over it.

People of African descent and Hispanics are imo more tolerant of the heat and likewise INTOLERANT of the cold. I've seen this many times in the hospital; people who are hispanic or black usually (of course there are exceptions) want the heat on, even in the summer months while their white roomate is smothering and needs an extra fan and staff can't hardly step into the room without getting drenched with sweat. Isn't there some trend about Pedro Martinez pitching when it's below 40 degrees?

I think this statement is a little different than Jimmy the Greek, however, because he was questioning a black persons ability to a job because of intelligence. This statement has nothing to do with ability or intelligence, so I think it's different.

Anyway, I didn't find this statement too bad, and I've seen far worse from Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson (ie hymietown). Maybe I'll be called a racist now, but I think it's a pretty benign statement.

I have a Black guy that works for me and he lives by the fact that he can outwork me in the summer.............but not the winter months! He said it so why the hell the big stink when someone who is in the media says it?

It is a well known fact that black people and hispanic people are more tolerant to heat! WHO CARES? I go outside and work in the sun and I sweat like a whore on the front row of church ( If I offended any prostitutes I apologize! ) But when my buddy is outside working in the hot sun I am waiting on him to break off into a solo of Zippidee Do Da any minute...........I mean it does not phase him! I on the other hand feel as if I am about to explode and am making more whining noises than Fran Dreschler! It Kills me to be in the heat but does not bother him one dang bit! Now when you let the old T-mometer hit around 32 degrees.............Ole Freak hits high gear! I love the cold weather but My friend is running for the fireplace! It is simply one of the many differences that we as different races posses! NO MORE NO LESS!

I wonder why then the Dallas newspaper this morning published the latest army study which found that black soliders are a number of times more likely to die from heat related illnesses because of a gene they carry (sorry article not in front of me). This science would fly in the face of what most people "believe" to be well known fact.

You think it just may be that they are so tolerant to the heat that they don't bother getting out of it in time before they get too hot and die and not the old Gene Card?

Just Wondering

Dude I have no idea, you're the science expert here I guess, just telling you what I saw on ESPN and read in the paper.

I would love to see the day when a stupid statement, (like this one) could just be dismissed without folks freakin out and trying to be so PC.

Be that as it may....if it were a "white guy", the Cubs would be looking a new manager ASAP, because the NAACP would boycott the rest of there games if they didn't. That is what I find to be really stupid.

It was just a stupid thing to say. I don't think he ment any harm.

Not trying to argue the fact of whether or not the SCIENCE of the statement is Faux or not! Just stating the obvious! I too think that it is ridiculous for everyone to get all bent over this! I think that the paper is just trying to lend validity to the fuel for the PC fire! Like they are trying to conjer up these ideas that the statements were in fact racist! Think about it..........If they can prove with science that this is in fact a bonk statement then it leads most to believe that Baker is just favoring blacks......When in fact I know that Black people are more tolerant of the damn heat than white people, I don't care what some Army Doctor says! I guess then by the people that get so damn stressed out over this kind of stuffs reasoning is that it would be racist to say that white people are more tolerant of Sickle cell anemia

can Dusty work my cabana?? help is dropping like flies, these NBA MOOKS are heat and sunshine intolerant. if he works the cabana and the grill, I'll make sure his feet never touch snow from his front door to his 78 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, with the factory installed 8 track, LOL!!! I'll even make him supervisor of the "chipmunk suicide watch", much to the chagrin of my "Mayflower" nephew. He could swap history w/the tot"s Dad. That would be real interesting over a Sam Adams Summer ale, LOL!! hypothetically speaking of course ;)

If any individual w/1 iota of paleness in their complexion said that it would be front page news. Where's Cinci Marge when you need here?

haven't seen anything that has anything to do with heat tolerance as far as skin color....if anything, darker color would be worse in heat because it absorbs more light whereas white reflects it....

just wear a black shirt on a hot summer day as opposed to a white one and see....

most of these old wives tales are bogus......Dusty's is no exception...however, almost all science comes about from hypotheses....

same when Jimmy the Greek thinks blacks think differently or have different muscle structure....who knows....maybe they do???

just because someone thinks it is insensitive to say such a thing doesn't necessarily mean that it is untrue.....

i would like to see the PC crowd read any book on epidemiology....shit my textbooks would all be deemed insensitive because they are always describing generalized differences among the races....

just pisses me off whenever a theory or fact is given out concerning blacks or some other minority group and the gay pride people or Jesse Jackson quickly brandishes it as hate speech, discrimination, etc.....but the other way around, and the SILENCE speaks volumes
