HARLAN'S HOLIDAY--nice win at GP but was helped by a perfect trip. Stalked a brutally fast pace. Nice horse but I don't know if he's good enough to win the Derby.

REPENT--I thought this horse had almost no chance in the Illinois Derby and the late scratch of one of the speeds really hurt even more. Under the circumstances I thought he ran pretty good, closing on a soft pace/wire winner and was wide on both turns. I actually like him better now because the odds will be better.

JOHANNESBURG--Forget him. He got beat by a 3YO filly yesterday going 7f on turf in Europe. He may be good but he won't be ready next month. Next.

CAME HOME--Another nice horse but likely to be overbet at Churchill. I'll be shocked if he gets 10 furlongs. Once again, he benefitted from being near a slow pace and sprinted turning for home.

LUSTY LATIN--This horse impressed me more in the SA Derby than Came Home did. He was closing into that soft pace, although the final time was the 11th slowest SA Derby in history.

BUDDHA--I think he's running in the Wood next week. This colt is very physically impressive. He won a low level allowance at GP by about 9 or 10 lengths in very good time. We'll see how he handles tougher competition in the Wood.

WAR EMBLEM--I can't believe they'd actually run this horse in the Derby if other speeds like Booklet are in the race. He looks like a great horse for course, but CD isn't Spt, where speed rules.

BOOKLET--Had a rough trip dueling in the Fla Derby but likely will be compromised since there's usually 4-5 speedballs in the Derby.

I've probably missed a few since there's still several major preps. Expect a big field and a fast pace.

I just saw the charts from Santa Anita's Saturday card. The early pace in the SA Derby wasn't bad, but the final time was definitely disappointing. The Gr 2 San Bernadino was run at the same 1 1/8 mile distance 2 races before the SA Derby. Here's the splits:

San Bernadino

22.88 47.17 1:11.15 1:49.11

Santa Anita Derby

23.18 46.92 1:10.95 1:50.02

Looking at the fractions, maybe Lusty Latin was passing tiring horses. They went the final 3 furlongs in over 39 seconds while the San Bernadino went just under 38 seconds for the final 3 furlongs.
