Interleague starts this week leaving several good bats on the bench. The DH is a part of baseball now and please don?t start with the ?I?m a baseball purist? crap, save that for a different post.
My attention last night was split between my Scotch and the Giants game when a revolutionary idea occurred to me. Instead of leaving a great bat (ex: Edgar Martinez) on the bench at a National League park. Start him in the 3 hole as a pitcher.
Ok, ok I know Ed can?t pitch but he wouldn?t have too. The visitors bat first in a baseball game. This would allow Ed to get one solid at bat before riding the pine. If the inning went well he would have a shot at a RBI or R. If it went poorly he could shoot for the fences. Either way he would sit after the 1st half of the 1st inning leaving the pitcher further away from batting and assuring his solid bat getting a shot in the game.
The pitcher would appreciate not having another embarrassing at bat and could still warm up in the pen for the inning.
Just a thought?
