Unlike the phony astro-turf Tea Party movement in this country, I love to see real democratic uprisings like the one in Egypt and the recent Green Party movement in Iran. People taking to the streets to take their country back, or least try to take it back, from oppressive regimes.

The uprising in Egypt is not only a rejection of the Mubarak regime, it's also a rejection of U.S. interventionist foreign policy in the Middle-East. For almost 30 years, the Egyptian people have been under the thumb of a guy who's taken foreign aid from the U.S. and funneled it into his personal bank accounts, properties and assets and into the pockets of members of his regime. What wasn't pilfered by the Mubarak regime came back to the U.S. military industrial complex in the purchase of fighter jets, bombers, tanks, helicopters, missiles, bombs and munitions of all kinds. All the while, U.S. administrations from Reagan to Obama sent foreign aid to Egypt with a wink and a nod, knowing full well where the money was going.

Yup, I love democratic uprisings. Too bad we Americans are too apathetic and complacent to even vote someone into office that might upset the status quo.

Here's a video of a young protester standing up to pro-Mubarak forces in Alexandria. They shot him down in cold blood even though he posed no threat to them.

I was talking to someone about this last night. Americans are too fat and lazy to see anything close to this. Not to mention all the morons who believe all the misinformation they are fed on a daily basis.

Well, of course we have the electoral process by which we can change our government. We don't need to riot in the streets.

The fact that we continue to elect idiots doesn't change the fact that our process is democratic. We *can* put good people in office any time we decide to stop listening to the lies of politicians and pundits.

So we aren't a third-world dictatorship, for which I am thankful.

However I am happy to see the Egyptians demand democracy. It's good for them and good for the world. At present it appears the Egyptian military will permit and encourage free elections.

We can hope Egyptian democracy rubs off on other dictatorships. The Saudis, Iranians, North Koreans and the horn of Africa dictators must be pissing themselves.

If the time ever comes when we do need to resort to riots and violence, I think there will be plenty of Americans who will stand up, some of them right on this board. Look back no further than Selma and Birmingham to see Americans standing up against goons and dogs.

Hell, if it meant overthrowing a dictator, I'd share a foxhole with Lumi.

From the London Telegraph...

From the London Telegraph...

Egypt: Hosni Mubarak used last 18 days in power to secure his fortune

Hosni Mubarak used the 18 days it took for protesters to topple him to shift his vast wealth into untraceable accounts overseas, Western intelligence sources have said.

The former Egyptian president is accused of amassing a fortune of more than ?3 billion - although some suggest it could be as much as ?40 billion - during his 30 years in power. It is claimed his wealth was tied up in foreign banks, investments, bullion and properties in London, New York, Paris and Beverly Hills.

This is another reason why you won't hear me quibble about an aggressive and overall reduction in foreign aid now and in the future. In fact - I could see this being one of the very first things that should be proposed to be cut from our existing budget shortfall. Why is this never brought up - I can't see how taking a big stand on this could be as damaging to individual senators and congressfolk as many other issues. No doubt campaign funding and lobbyists reach in many areas.

John McCain refers to the pro-Democracy movement in the Middle-East as a virus. So I guess the Republican take on Democracy is that it's good Democracy if the U.S. imposes it at the end of a gun barrel. But it's bad Democracy when the people rise up and impose their will to oust oppressive regimes.

When exactly did John McCain morph into Glenn Beck?

Poor ole befuddled John McCain. If he'd have hung it up ten years ago, he could be remembered as a minor patriot and a man who served his country faithfully for his adult life.

Now he'll be remembered as a fool, blown in all directions by the political flavor of the day.

Maybe he can use the Reagan defense - "He had Alzheimer's you know."
