short card tonight but i see two games that are right in my wheelhouse. long time followers know it's about to get ugly, soooo . . . . .
uncg +4: trying the spartans one more time, and if they don't win this one i'll write them off as unplayable. this is a rivalry game for those that aren't aware, as these two soco schools are situated just a few miles apart. spartans now sit 0-14, but have played the #5 sos so far. the poor start is hardly an anomaly; last two seasons they've started 2-12, and finished 8-23 and 5-25. thing is, they've beaten elon three out of four in that stretch. that's exactly one third of the spartans' soco wins over that period. the phoenix have been road favorites once in the history of the soco as now configured - and lost that game outright. elon did manage two nights ago to beat the same samford team that beat the spartans two nights before that, despite shooting 32.7% from the floor. they managed because the bulldogs shot 35%, and elon inexplicitly pounded them on the boards 42-24. that ain't gonna happen tonight, as the phoenix are not that good of a rebounding team. it's obvious that samford just went flat on the second leg of the road trip, and about the only thing the spartans do decently is rebound. bottom line is, this is a game the spartans not only know they can win . . . they expect to win.
tenn-martin +11-: this should be about all the ugly that even the most loyal of followers can choke down, but feel it's the right side. those who read these ramblings regularly know i have cashed on the govs twice over the last two weeks. peay and their coach dave loos is one of my favorite teams to play on, and watch. but tonight's game finds them in a classic sandwich, coming off a very satisfying win at archrival murray state, and heading toward a tough matchup saturday at tennessee state, followed by their second espn game in a little over two weeks at tennessee tech. if ever there was a spot to let up just a wee bit, tonight is it.
