*****Great topic! I'd like to jump in with a few toughts and opinions of my own......then hear others opionons, too.

Here are my superlatives. Jump in!

Baseball play by play: Vin Scully, Jon Miller, Henry Kalas, Charlie Steiner, Jerry Coleman,Bob Costas. Analyst: Joe Morgan, Rick Suitcliffe.

***There is Vin Scully -- and then everybody else. Scully is the best in the business and is a living legend. Jon Miller is a respectable second in my view as he's intentionally low-key -- perfect for baseball. I've never liked or cared for Bob Costas -- far too self important in my estimation. His Olympic grandstanding was a disgrace.

College Football Play by Play: Keith Jackson, Mike Franklin, The guy from CBS, (can't remember his name), Mike Tirico. Analyst: Mike Gottfried, Bob Griese, Tim Brandt.

***No agrument.

Basketball: I don't watch much but I like Chick Hearn.
Bill Walton is an absolute schmuck

***Marv Albert is the worst, in my opinion. Far too New York oriented. He's worse a homer than Summaral with the Cowboys. Also, I can't get the image of Albert wearing panties and a garter belt (from the court testimony). When Albert pipes up with "O'Neal gives Divac a facial" (slam dunk), one of his favorite lines, I nearly lose it. I really like the TNT in studio team. Very opinioned show that isn't afraid to touch controversy.

NFL: Thank God Summeral retired. I really like Hank Stram and Howard David on CBS Radio Monday nite football.

***Love Hank Stram. Used to love Jack Buck (great raspy voice for football). I'm in the minority here, but I really like Joe Theisman's analysis, very detail oreinted and doesn't play to the idiot factor watching the NFL. You either get it or you don't. Also like Al McQuire, who can be funny and very opinioined at the same time. Mike Patrick is an excellent play by play man with these two. Can't stand Al Michaels -- who is far to interested in doing the show business side of Monday Night Football. He knows incredibly little about the game. In studio announcers are dreadful on both networks -- far too much clowning around on the FOX show with Bradshaw and Long, and the rest constantly teasing each other. HOW ABOUT ANALYSING THE FOOTBALL GAME, YOU IDIOTS! I've never learned anything from these motormouths. ESPN in studio team does an outstanding job. Also like the HBO series with Stram and Jawarski.

I'll be interested to hear what others say.

Least Favorites: Chip Caray, Skip Caray, Joe Morgan, Tim McCarver, Rick Sutcliffe and Bill Walton.

The one announcer I can't stand and won't watch anything he is on: Chris Berman.

Mty all-time favorite pairing in baseball has to be when Ken "Hawk" Harrelson worked with Tom "Whimpy" Pacoriek(sp?)
Whimpy just retired from the White Sox broadcasts a few years ago, and now D.J. (Darrin Jackson) is Hawk's partner.

"Whattaya think, 'Ol Whimparoo?" Is Hawk's classic line.

Seriously though, two ex-ballplayers who were very understated in their commentary combined with their thorough knowledge of the game made White Sox broadcasts entertaining as hell for me.
I've even come to enjoy what D.J. brings to the broadcast now.

Anything is better than the terrible Joe Carter and the dork, Chip Carey that do the Cubs games. If Fox Sports Chicago doesn't bring back the best analyst in the game next season (Steve Stone) it will be a crime.....

I loved Keith Jackson but he made a better fit when he was doing SEC games (maybe it's because he could still see the field back then)

I also like the Sunday Night crew on ESPN for football and I've never seen Jaworski on HBO but the Edge matchup is a can't miss show for me in the football season for his film breakdown alone.

If you like Hawk and Wimpy, you have to be a Sox fan because they are complete homers. Ripping the umps on a bad play against the good guys and if the call went the Sox way, "I think we got away with one there, Wimperoo", but I loved them for it.

In baseball, I really like Vin Scully and Dave Niehaus (broadcaster of my hometown M's, for anybody who might not know -- honestly think he's as good as the come!!)

College football my favorites are Keith Jackson, Brad Nessler and Ron Franklin. Also really enjoy Mike Gottfried as an analyst.

In the NFL I've always liked Don Criqui (sp?) Think he especially does a good job of building the drama as a close game heads into the latter stages (4th qtr) etc.

Don't care at all for Marv Albert, Chip Caray, or Todd Christensen (very bland!!) and Jack Buck was TERRIBLE the handful of times I had to hear him during world series play. I'm sure there are others that I don't enjoy hearing, but amazingly enough they either don't get enough games to do or I just tune them out when I recognize their voice(s)

The Legend

The Legend

If any of you get an opportunity, listen to Tigers radio play by play legend Ernie Harwell. At 84 years of age he is retiring after this season and he truly makes listening to a baseball game enjoyable. Few do a better job of illustrating a picture over radio than Ernie. His best line... is when someone strikes out looking

"....and he stood there like the house on the side of the road"

Thanks Ernie

I think Joe Buck is excellent. Really knows when to shut up. Is not afraid at all of LONG pauses (like when Big Mack hit 62).

Funny. Relaxed. Knows its just a game (unlike Costas, who I dislike intensely). On national broadcasts, he acts very much like the guys who do 162 games a year, that is, just talking about irrelevant things while the game is being played.

Buck, AFAIK, came up with "track. wall. gone" which is a great HR call, but has been ripped off by lesser people since.

Most of all, he just doesn't do anything annoying. Had a great rapport with Brenly, but I don't like McCarver as much.

For hoops, Walton, I like. I never used to but I like his knowledge and at least he has a personality. At least he's a guy where you either love him or hate him, unlike some neutral say-nothings, Fratello, e.g.

Love Vin Scully. May God keep him going another twenty. Amazing thing is, watching the local telecasts is that he doesn't look like he has aged in twenty years. A shame he isn't on a national stage anymore. Chicky Hearn was/is one of my favorites also but has slipped some. On the national scale, really no one that I like in baseball. Braves announcers are pretty bad, ESPN guys are pretty weak. Berman makes me vomit. Miller is decent. Costas is a joke, guys said it well, self important blowhard. For hoops, I like the teaming of Stockton/Brown. For football, as mentioned before Nessler and Franklin are one sharp duo. Still enjoy Keith, his teaming with Fouts should be a solid duo. I hate to admit it but I don't hate Theisman either as ESPN's football broadcast is the best out there I think. Madden is overrated.
In finishing, I think Hank Stram should be back on TV unless his toupe is to unbecoming. :p Gary Thorne, Bill Rafferty, Darrell Waltrip, Tommy or Timmy Smith the soccer guy on ESPN's CL, LA Kings local guy (forgot his name), John McEnroe plus his brother with Cliff Drysdale, good chemistry there, Johnny Miller. Those are others in different sports I enjoy listening to.

I love the guy who does Monday Night Football on radio. He has two first names. Can't remember either.

Also, Keith Jackson and Vin.

My favs:

N.F.L.-Don't care what anyone says,Pat Sumerall-John Madden.I'll always remember Thanksgiving day football games.

M.L.B.-Vin Scully,I was lucky enough to grow up in the L.A. area,so I've had the pleasure of listening to him since 1970. I also got to meet him on a 5th grade field trip to Los Angeles City Hall.He was very nice and real thin back then.

N.B.A.-Chick Hearn,Glad he's O.K. He,like Vin Scully will tell it like it is.If the Lakers are playing poorly,he says it.

N.H.L.-Bob Miller,Calls a great game.

I've been very lucky to have the latter 3 as my home team announcers.

Can't stand-Bill Walton,Chisox announcer Hawk put it on the board Harrellson.
