High School Football : Degen Plays
*Disclaimer.... I follow high school football pretty closely, but only wager for fun. I can't imagine anyone actually taking it seriously enough that they are worried about a line move at this level. If you are, I recommend getting some help. Still, I think there is some value by including a pick or two in a parlay if your books will allow. Other than that, it's only beer money and for fun. Also, if you have any input into the games please feel free to contribute. I am know California and Nevada football pretty well, however, I can only glean information from the internet and MaxPreps, so some of my info is limited. Onward.......

1. LA Habra +6 over Tesoro (1 unit)..... This line was at 7' yesterday when I made my wager. I was surprised it moved that fast, and I want to make sure that for posting purposes I will only use the 6. Don't want to offend the puritan prep masters in this forum.
It's simple... The wrong team is favored here, and I expect LA Habra to handle Tesoro fairly easy. The Highlands won their Cif SS section last year and have several returning players on defense which is their strength (although you wouldn't know it by last week's final score 42-34)..the opponent El Toro had the lead in the 4th quarter, however the Defense forced 3 turnovers to take the lead and the win. Tesoro is fairly young this year... They have some decent players that transferred in but they haven't been cleared by the CIF to play. I like the Highlanders to win outright! WINNER

Couple more DEGEN :

*6 high school football teams will participate overseas in the AER LINGUS College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland. The 3 high school games will lead into the showcase College game (Georgia Tech vs Boston College). There are a ton of activities planned for the boys and their entourage. There is sight seeing, a parade, pep rally, tail gating, etc. These Coaches have to not only deal with the headache of logistics; but they have to make sure the players are well rested, eating properly, avoiding jet lag, sleeping in new accommodations... And, they have to make sure all their equipment makes it to the field. This wouldn't be an issue for a DIV 1 college program, however, these are high schoolers; more worried about getting to 3rd base with their girlfriends.

2. Westminister, GA /Community School of Naples, FL Over 53....(1 unit) I feel pretty confident that these two teams will put up some points. This is the opener of the 3 games. It pits a Georgia power vs a Florida school. This is the first time this production has had schools from GA, FL, and NJ. The spread has Westminister favored by 24 and I'm thoroughly confused by this line. Granted, Westminister plays in a larger league and they are the reigning Class 3A State Champs, but it should be noted that they won state with a 7-4 record. They have a new head coach, and while considered to have a strong Senior class (they have dropped the first 2 games this season)
Community School went 9-2 last year. They are coming off of 3 straight 10 win seasons. Last year they put up 40+ points in 7 games. Last week they won their opener handily 47-6. Their Coach is very progressive and has implemented a very advanced offense with a wide open playbook. The system is so complex it makes it difficult for the Defenses to adjust. They have a returning QB who will lead the aerial attack. Their weakness is their depth, but they do have 9 returning Seniors. Like I said, I really like the Over here, and if I can find a ml I will play a little on that.. I really don't see how Westminister wins this by more than a td. WINNER

Adding :

3. Marist, GA /Belen Jesuit, FL Under 45 (1 unit).... Two very good programs with a combined 60+ years of Head Coaching. The middle game of the 3. The Coach for Marist has won 9 or more games in all but 2 seasons in his 31 years at the school. He runs the Triple Option (I'm sure Georgia Tech will be pleased) Marist hot off on the wrong foot by dropping the opener in 2 OT. School is coming off a 10-3 season. The fullback is a stud and ran for 188 yards with 3 TDs on 32 carries last week.

Belen Jesuit was 7-4 last year, however, they did go 6-0 in their league. This all male private prep school boasts a Head Coach who has been building his program for 30 years, too. Another strong running game with a strong Senior RB, who also opens holes on the misdirection of the Wing-T offense. The surprise here is a starting RB who is only a Freshman, but already has offers from Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College, and Miami. The O-line is anchored by 6'3" 285 lb A. Serrano. The offense has a capable Senior QB (all you need in this offense).

2 running offenses, more than likely means running clock. The Defenses are stout, and should keep the score below the 45. No leans on the side. WINNER

What the he'll... Last one

4. St. Peters Prep - 20 over a Blessed Trinity, GA. Obviously, you don't know what your going to get with teenagers traveling over 4,000 miles to play a football game. St. Peters led by Senior signal caller, Jonathan Lewis (offers from Rutgers, Georgia, Iowa, and Boston College) he threw for 1,669 yards, w/19 TDs last fall. Had 8 rushing TDs and his Coach believes those numbers will go way up. Peter's Prep finally moved to the Catholic league in NJ after winning 15 straight conference championships and had won 115 straight games. This team has 16 returning starters; boasts 8 DIV 1 commits.

Blessed Trinity is no slouch. They finished last year
13-1-1, losing to Westminister (also participating) on the last play in OT in the 3A State Title Game. They did open last week with a win 25-14,which saw the game called in 2nd half due to thunderstorm and lightning. They have actually won 2 games both were very close to start season. This may be too many points, but give me the team loaded with talent.

Thoughts on Sammy Bradford going to my beloved Vikings:00hour I think....

When I heard we had traded a first round draft pick and a fourth rounder, I thought "oh chit"... Shades of Hershel Walker all over again.

Then I got to thinking. You know his numbers with Philadelphia weren't all that bad. He has always impressed me as someone who can take a little criticism and keep his cool. He's a pretty good game manager which is really all we need. Let's face it, this is Adrian Petersons team and he just needs to make the occasional pass to keep the chains moving. On a side note : Bradford played with Peterson in 2006 (although Bradford red shirted that year) There should be some comfort in that relationship. Zims is a hell of a coach and has developed our defense to be one of the best in the NFC.

I'm a little more optimistic today than I was a couple of days ago when it felt like the sky was falling. Let's get er done!

No problem with your thoughts in my thread. Totally cool getting feedback.

Sam Bradford? I pretty much agree with everything you said. I think the Vikings are going to be fine. Zimmer has brought a whole new mentality to the team. He is a great motivator (kinda reminds me of Bellichek). I think the defense is going to be one of the best in the NFC and should keep us in every game. All Bradford needs to do is lead by example. Hopefully this will be the right fit for him. We shall soon see.

Overall Record :

Olympic Basketball: 18-15-2 (+20.5 units)
NFLX : 12-12 (-7.5 units)
Degen HSF: 10-5-1 (+4 units)
College Foots: 4-2 (+5.3 units)

*While I have made it clear my feelings on wagering on High School football. I have found that handicapping HSF is kinda fun, however, now that College and Pro Foots is here I don't have a lot of excess time. There are some diamonds in the rough... Like my top 2 plays this weekend. The value lies in anchoring games on a parlay card, because your not going to get rich with the limits placed on the bets.

See you next week for the NFL.
