I figure some of you still play or umpire slow pitch softball. Came up on a rule last week which I thot was too stupid to even address.

One out with 2 runners on base, both runners step off before contact is made. Ever since I started playing the game both runners have been declared out. Now I have some young kids telling me that's not so. Only the front runner is. Can anybody help me on this? Thanks :0008

I play and have umpired some. I have no clue, Were you playing ASA or USSSA and how many umpires did you have?

It's tough to watch two runners and call balls and strikes in a two man crew but if they both saw two different runners leave early. I tend to lean with you that we're going to bang both because it says a runner may not leave before the ball is struck.

Thanks. Kind of a Hybrid between the 2 associations, but we don't permit runners to leave until contact. No one disputed them leaving , and while it doesn't happen often, I never knew of anyone only calling one runner out and not the other.

I don't think the young ump will be able to provide a rule that states what he/she told you but I also don't believe that the rule books address what happens when 2 or 3 runners leave early.

Every rule book I've seen puts a clause that allows umpires to judge on anything not covered in the book. MLB 9.01C is an example. My personal judgment agrees with you that if two people violate the same rule at the same time, then both suffer the consequence. Both Runners Out

Have played 10 years...we played nsa early on and now switched to ASA....that being said, I have no clue what the ruling is on that????

Was there contact on the pitch?

Or did the hitter take?

if they scored on the play, and it was because they left early, ida said both out.

If no play, and no harm, ida told em they were idiots and don't do it again..
