Microsoft is enforcing an update that will update your WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) tool. It will scan different points in your registry to see if your copy is legit or not. If it's not, you will be notified and within a week, you will not be able to boot into Windows.

Here's the MSKBA. You may have noticed that a lot of MS links on their downloads page have a new icon beside them that symbolize WGA.

We have a computer or two at the office that doesn't have the correct copy of XP installed on it. Someone lost some keys or something, I'm not sure. We have dozens of legal licenses, so clearly we are not stealing anything.

This verification has been around for months, and I haven't heard anything about the policy changing. It just prevents you from downloading non-critical updates.

I honestly don't think they will make a computer unusable, because it would be a PR nightmare.

I don't see anything in that link, that suggests a change in this policy. Maybe I am missing something?
