Gustavo Chacin is scheduled to face Joe Mays on Friday when the Blue Jays open their Grapefruit League schedule against the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers, but the Venezuelan rookie may not make the start.
Chacin came down with a fever on Wednesday and the Jays aren't going to push him. Left-hander Scott Downs, who pitched briefly for the Montreal Expos last year, could get the start in his place.
Right-fielder Alex Rios will make the trip to Fort Myers but will be limited to DH duties because of a sore shoulder
Right-hander Joe Mays will take the mound for the Twins for the first time since having Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2003
................
from Cinci paper: Right-hander Aaron Harang faces right-hander Hideo Nomo in the "A" game.
...........................
ATL John Thomson will throw the first two innings and then be followed by Chris Reitsma, Gabe White, Adam Bernero and Matt Childers. Former Brave J.D. Drew is scheduled to make the trip with his Dodgers teammates.
......................................
The Tribe continues its Grapefruit League schedule Friday with a game in Kissimmee, Fla., against the Astros. Right-hander Scott Elarton will start for the Tribe, and he'll face future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens.
....................
The Bucs and Yankees will square off again Friday at McKechnie Field. Southpaw Mark Redman is scheduled to make his Pirates debut against former Florida Marlins teammate Carl Pavano. Albie Lopez, Salomon Torres, Mike Johnston, Justin Reid, Rick White and Mark Corey are also scheduled to take the hill for the Pirates.
........................
Mulder, who had been the planned starter for the Redbirds in Port St. Lucie, will instead pitch Friday at home at Roger Dean Stadium. He'll be followed by all the remaining scheduled pitchers from Thursday night: Anthony Reyes, Bill Pulsipher, Toby Borland, Mike Myers and Chris Gissell.
The Mets' scheduled pitchers for Thursday will all throw on the side rather than being pushed back to Friday's game. Kris Benson, Mike DeJean, Dae-Sung Koo and Bartolome Fortunato had been slated to toe the rubber on Thursday evening. Martinez, scheduled all along to pitch Friday, stays on the same timetable that was originally announced.
