The Mets are in a major funk, having sunk to the #3 NL Wild Card spot only a half-game ahead of the Reds. May be we should figure, “Well, their 13th loss in 15 games, two out of three in the series to Atlanta last night was against their nemesis who they’ll never conquer no mat ter where the Braves are in the standings, and they can get back on track now that the Braves have left town.” But… nah. The Mariners are in their own battle for the post-season as the #1 AL Wild Card and only 1.5 games behind first-place Houston in the AL West. They’ve won 8 of 10 and are throwing ultra-consistent Luis Castillo (3.19 ERA, 1.19 WHIP). Sean Manaea made a late entry into 2025 for the Mets and they’re 1-5 in his starts, none of them longer than 5 innings. The other side has scored 7, 7, 7 run in the last three, 8 in the loss before that.
Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (3) 15th, 16th, 17th
The 68-52 Cubs have fallen eight games behind in the NL Central (3-6, -$530 last 10 days), so they need a strong showing against the last place Pirates to solidify their standing in the wild-card race. They should make short work of a last place Pittsburgh team that is only 17-42 outside of PNC Park (-$1860). Chicago has a 52-34 record vs. right-handers (+$1155, 5.3 runs per game) and no one they’re expected to face this weekend at Wrigley Field gives us much cause for concern. BEST BET: Cubs vs. right-handers.

The Red Sox have a 39-22 record here at Fenway Park (+$1090) and they have the trio of Brayan Bello (3.24 ERA), Lucas Giolito (+$790, 3.68) and Garrett Crochet (2.42) set to appear. Miami has the 3rd worst team ERA in the National League (4.56). BEST BET: Bello/Giolito/Crochet.
