4-4 last night but caught the biggie for +3.5
Interesting matchup tonight on ESPN U as the Zips travel to Toledo. Trust me on this when I tell you that Toledo has more raw offensive skill and better athletes than anybody else in the conference. Their big problem is that they are lazy on defense and often play down to the level of their opponent. I'm just not sold on Todd K being a great coach at all. They are coming off a surprising home loss to CMU who just happens to be vastly improved and plays a similar up tempo game as Toledo.
Akron laid the wood to Western Mich in their last out employing a Nolan Richardson like 40 minutes of hell defense that kept the WM behind the 8 ball all night. It was the best I have seen Akron look on the defensive end since they blasted Southern Cal earlier this season. The thing is though is that Western is much slower than Toledo and are down near the bottom of the conf in possesions per game along with Akron. Despite that, Western shot well from beyond the arc.
A big factor tonight is in the paint where Akron's Forsythe has exceeded expectations leading the Zips in PPG and RPG. Tonight though he faces a true big man in Boothe that can match him. The big difference is that Toledo also gets good glass work from Weatherspoon which Akron seems to lack. Another big edge goes to Toledo in PG play with Brown going against a couple of true freshmen.
Akron does not defend the 3 well and Toledo hits a decent 38%. Toledo also enjoys an advantage at the stripe which could be a large factor.
I could go on but essentially, I just think that this is a bad matchup in many areas for Akron and that they will have to shoot the ball really, really well to stay in it. Toledo's loss to CMU should be a wake up call that results in the Rockets giving their best effort tonight.
