Even after Thursday's win over mistake prone Stanford, the Wildcats are only 3-6 SU/ATS in their last nine outside of Tucson, including a nine-point loss at UCLA last month. Now the Cats are back in La-La Land to face the Bruins and they'll have to battle this streaking UCLA team without the services of the suspened Hassan Adams.
Not only is Adams the team's leading scorer at 17.3 ppg, the senior also serves as the team's emotional leader. Hard to look up to a leader who's been suspended. Arizona rallied Thursday with defense and forced 23 Stanford turnovers. Well, don't look for the same kind of sorry effort in protecting the basketball by the Bruins.
UCLA has won and covered five straight games with Thursday's 32-point drilling of Oregon State. UCLA exerted little energy in disposing of the Beavers as the Bruins rested their stars in preperation of a conference tourney title run. Sophomre stars Jordan Farmer and Arron Affalo logged season lows in minutes Thursday. UCLA coach Ben Howland always knew how to get his Pittsburgh teams ready at Big East Tournament time and it appears he knows what he's doing at Westwood, too.
The only negative from Thursday's win was that senior wing Cedric Bozeman sprained his ankle and is listerd as questionable for tonight's game. But considering he's scored in double figures just once since mid-December, I figure that the more talented Brfuins (runs of 10-2 SU and 8-1 ATS) will find enough offense to compensate for his absence.
Arizona is not a good defensive team and it does not contest the three-ball well. Farmer and Affalo should get plenty of open looks tonight. The Cats are a very ordinary 6-5 SU in their last 11 games and have covered just five of their last 18 games. UCLA brings a lot of energy to the court and they're easily the better defensive team in this matchup. They shoot free throws better, to boot.
Maybe with Adams in the lineup to provide some scoring punch, I could see Arizona keeping this one close. But he's out and Arizona will not force the kind of mistakes from UCLA that it forced Stanford into.
