Virginia (pk) 1 unit. hard to love this game, because both teams should struggle to score. but after a good start to the season and a terrible stretch in the middle, the cavs are playing better. they covered at fsu and dominated Miami last week. va tech hit their lowest point in a long time last week, scoring only 3 points in an OT loss at wake. really hard to believe this team won at ohio st. the winner of the commonwealth trophy will be bowl eligible, so you'd think there'd be plenty of motivation. however, I can't see anyone on va tech getting too fired up to play in the beef o'brady's bowl. the cavs haven't played in a bowl game in 3 years, so I think that's a motivational edge for them after a 2-win season (1-win if you don't count beating VMI). also, Virginia should be fired up to get their first win over tech since 2003.
western mich (-7.5) 2 units. yeah, I'm gonna keep betting against the huskies. the line on the last 3 northern ill games has been begging for northern ill money. today makes it 4 straight. the huskies are 2-6 ATS their last 8. western mich has covered 9 straight since the opener. and they've covered the last 5 by double digits. only downside is western mich knows even with a win, they're probably not going to the mac championship. they'll need Toledo to lose at eastern mich, where they're favored by 23. they still should have plenty of motivation, as nobody on their roster has beaten northern ill.
iowa (-1) 2 units. senior day for the hawkeyes against a Nebraska team that has to be reeling right now. first the carnage at Wisconsin. followed by the home loss to Minnesota. next up is 4 weeks of practice and then a midlevel bowl game. I just don't see the huskers coming to play today. iowa has been solid at home since the loss to iowa st, beating Indiana by 24 and northwestern by 41 before the close loss to Wisconsin last week.
Arkansas (-3) 3 units. um... somebody please explain to me what is up with this line? the hogs are seriously favored here? don't get me wrong, I love them today. but this line SMELLS. I can't find anything on mass suspensions or mauk being hurt. sure, the hogs have covered 8 of 9 after losing the season opener and they're probably the best team Missouri has faced other than Georgia, but this line seems insane. mizzou laying 3 would still get plenty of action on the tigers.

I know Stanford is nowhere near as good as they've been the last few years. and Montgomery is out. how the hell will the cardinal score? but I also know ucla (and hundley in particular) is very inconsistent, and it would be typical for them to lay an egg after dominating usc. so here's the only scenario I can imagine that gives Stanford a chance... they shut down the ucla running game and hundley turns the ball over 2 or 3 times deep in ucla territory.
Arizona st (ML) 2 units to win 2.2. I'm looking at Arizona's schedule, and they haven't had much of a home field advantage this year. after dominating unlv to start the season (and should that really count?), here's their home schedule, with the line in parentheses:
(-20) beat Nevada by 7
(-8) beat cal by 4 (they scored 36 points in the 4th quarter and won on a hail mary as time expired)
(+2) scored the last 13 points to lose to usc by 2
(-17) scored the last 14 points to beat Colorado by 18
(-8) scored the last 6 points to beat Washington on a last-second fg
they have needed a 4th quarter comeback in almost every single game. and most of those were against mediocre teams. I went back 5 or 6 games. asu has been pretty solid in the 4th quarter. hopefully they won't blow this game.
