Happy Holidays to all youz guys!

I'd like to hear what all you MAC Conf guys have to say about this bowl gm on Wed....

I saw SDSU Aztecs beat Ariz St earlier this yr....

AZTECS Can... Run the ball (2 headed tagteam) against most teams.
They usually only pass short, ball-control type passes to the TE's quite a lot... 5-10 yd patterns, 2 men going out and everybody else help protect the qb... they don't turn it over much.. they play hard.. their def is pretty good vs the run, but was very shaky against the pass... at least against "decent" passers.

It is a "down year" for the team for sure...the last 2 yrs they had Donnel Pumphrey and Rashaad Penny (along with a qb that could throw deep), but this yr is diff....

What's the deal w/Ohio....? other than Toledo and Buffalo, is the Mac any good this yr

What's your guys take on the game..?

will ck bk manana... thanks and good luck to us :p

I have watched or attended about 7 or so Ohio games this year and a former Bobcat. That said they are a hard team to figure out. I watched them hammer teams like Buffalo only to struggle against teams like UMass and Miami. The Miami game cost them the MAC East to which they matched up well and could of beaten NIU, to win the MAC. They did the same thing last year when they lost to Akron, who they should of beaten soundly (like they did this year).

OU's QB is very good....but a lot of what he can do is based upon their ground game. They have 2 very good RB's that are somewhat a change of pace....both are bulls with good speed for their size. They will run it straight up the gut with RPO, while Rourke will get his yards outside of the tackles. If OU can run it, their offense will be very dangerous. Their receivers are good, Papi White is very good, but not too big. OU's OLine is huge and experienced and like Rourke, if they can run it makes it a lot easier on them because it seems they are a lot better run blocking, including play action, than they are drop back pass blockers. If they get behind they still need to run.

OU's D is solid up front, get good pressure and they have to because their DBacks have struggled against good passing attacks. Hagan is a top notch DB and has a shot to play pro but he can't be everywhere. They are still somewhat young in the middle/outside and it showed against Miami. Miami moved the ball with good QB play which took advantage of the cushion the OU DB's give, and then the sprint option due to Miami having a couple of burners who tore up OU...at least in the first half. Against Buffalo, Buffalo went down the field their first possession but Buff couldn't stop OU. OU played with urgency and after a turnover or two, all Buffalo did was try to throw deep it seemed every down, OU defended it, while their O cut through Buffalo like butter. Ohio needed that game a lot more than Buffalo did, and you could tell. Buffalo just needed to beat Bowling Green the next week to go to the MAC championship and they did by 3 or 4 TD's. Akron even passed the ball on OU in their last game but by that time the MAC east was gone (Buff was in the process of hammering BG) and the game was never in jeopardy.

Just started looking at SD State but I did see it looks like two different seasons....early they were able to beat Ariz St. and Boise.....later they lose to UNLV and Hawaii both of which I would think would struggle to beat Ohio.

So in conclusion as it relates to Ohio:
-They struggle against fast teams that can throw. Every team has speed but I'm talking about game breakers
that are in an innovative Offense that gets those players the ball. That is what Miami did. That is not what
Buffalo did or showed.
-They usually match up well with teams that try to run, run and run, then pass when they need to
-They struggle against fast Defenses. If D's try to line up and play smashmouth, Ohio doesn't mind that game
and will grind it out if needed...they have the Oline and backfield to do it.
-Frank Solich will have them ready and they should be ready to play which is important obviously in these type
of Bowl Games.

It's a low total at least when it relates to Ohio games. Hard for me to say what I would play right now since I haven't really looked into SDS's strengths, weaknesses or situation. But they are playing on a face track and there always seems to be big plays in Ohio games for both teams. So right now I like the total more than I do the side. I will say that a win over SDS would probably be one of the biggest name wins Ohio has had over the past few seasons. Not sure that would be the case with SDS and wondering if that can impact their motivation.

Hope that helps.....go Cats!

Is an excellent writeup Unicorn... that kind of eyes on analysis helps give good perspective of the team in question.

Aztecs schedule was so "blah" this yr I didn't get down there to see em much.
Nevada IS a good team and Aztecs played them hard, yet faltered against lesser opponents... their coach is solid, team doesn't quit on him, he recruits good kids, I just wonder if this is just a "down" year talent-wise. is it that simple?

that said, Aztecs have nottt displayed an effective deep passing game at all really, but they always have small, quick, athletic wr's ... but did not use them either because of inconsistent qb or fear of taking a sack... their TE's are big and strong, good blockers w good hands, and that's who they threw to almost exclusively... and both rb's are small but strong and tough runners, their running gm dominated entire 2h vs Ariz St...

generally speaking, Pac 12 tms linemen are going to be similar size (aren't they all monsters now??) and a little more athletic, but Aztecs O line handled em in the run game.

and yes, this may not have a big emotional "challenge" in it for SD to play Ohio this yr as they've been pretty good the last 3 yrs, but I think their coach won't let em sleepwalk thru this either.

I've got a 6 tm teaser working to the Aztecs plus 9... think I'll probably just play something on Ohio ml... and root for the middle!!

I'll get bk if I hear anything either way ~ GL

Ohio's A J Ouellette is the toughest RB that almost nobody knows about. He's a throwback, really enjoy watching this guy play.

i couldn't agree more, and i was sad to see that he's a senior. great college running back who runs like a damn bowling ball.

Hard nosed kid that Ouellette, hits the hole hard every time.....not sure he gets to the next level (size may be an issue for some), but certainly possess the heart to do so...

Guys easy to root for.

that was exactly what i was thinking... and then suddenly phillip lindsay popped into my head. he's listed at 5'8" and 190. from what i saw at colorado, i thought it was nuts that nobody drafted him. and look at him now. it's almost like all nfl gms value size and speed over, you know, actually being good at football.

ouellette will probably also have to go the undrafted route, but if he hooks up with the right team, could certainly make an nfl roster.

Probably see him on the New England sideline next year....perfect kinda player for Ole Bill...

I hope that you are correct. He's a damned fine football player. I often think that way too much emphasis is placed on 40 times, vertical jumps and raw natural athleticism when evaluating talent. Give me a guy like Ouelette every time. He's a smart, hard nosed guy with a strong will to win and great hands. Guys like him will over achieve at every level.

That kid Ouelette is definitely nfl caliber.... he reminds me of a stronger Rex Burkhead on the Pats.. kinda do it all type back... nfl doesn't use fullbacks/lead backs much for blocking, but this guy looks like a player ~ hope he makes it.

Aztecs offense was slippin n slidin and basically a no-show.... their qb's never seemed to be able to grip and thro the ball in a spiral.. didn't seem to affect Ohio's qb lol..

we move onward!

Congrats to Ohio backers!

I'm sure Ohio was use to playing in a lot worse weather than this, and colder.
