Can SMU get momentum for Sonny Dykes era with win over Louisiana Tech?

What's on the line?

In the first game of the Sonny Dykes era, SMU is looking to get a dose of momentum for the new head coach and the younger guys heading into 2018. A win would give Dykes credibility and trust from his players before their first offseason together. It'd also be a nice way to send SMU's seniors and receiver Courtland Sutton off to the next stages of their careers. And, as quarterback Ben Hicks put it last week, 8-5 sounds a lot better than 7-6.

As for Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs have a three-game bowl winning streak on the line on Wednesday. At 6-6, a victory would get Louisiana Tech a winning record on the season. Head coach Skip Holtz could get a win against Dykes, his predecessor at Tech. And then, as is the case for SMU, a postseason victory is its own reward, as are the rings the winners will get after this one.

When SMU has the ball

SMU will be without the majority of the offensive assistant coaches who started the season with the Mustangs. Graduate assistant G.J. Kinne will be the de facto offensive coordinator, calling plays from upstairs. Hicks is taking a lot of responsibility with the game planning and will have a lot of freedom to make decisions at the line of scrimmage. Louisiana Tech is middle-of-the-road in passing and rushing defenses, so running back Xavier Jones and receivers Sutton and Trey Quinn are all capable of being difference makers against the Bulldogs.

Where Louisiana Tech does shine is in forcing turnovers. The Bulldogs are 31st in the FBS with 22 forced turnovers this season and 12th with 16 interceptions, three of which they returned for touchdowns. The secondary is headlined by corner Amik Robertson, a freshman who had six breakups and four interceptions. He'll be tested by Sutton and Quinn.

When Louisiana Tech has the ball

The Bulldogs like to run the ball, with 457 rushing attempts to 386 passes this season. Boston Scott is a tough guy to bring down at 5-foot-6 and 203 pounds. Quarterback J'Mar Smith is a good runner too, and at 231 pounds SMU's pass rush knows he will be tough to bring down in the pocket; arm tackles aren't going to work with him.

SMU will be without cornerback Jordan Wyatt, who had knee surgery following SMU's win over Tulane. This will likely put sophomore Christian Davis back in the starting lineup after he was benched in favor of senior Cedric Lancaster late in the season. SMU has its entire defensive staff still in place so the Mustangs will have continuity on that side of the ball.

SMU probably comes out a little slow after all the distractions leading up to kickoff. But once the offense finds its groove the Mustangs should be able to put Louisiana Tech away.

I think the "distractions" for SMU are much worse....

--------- copied and pasting the following -------------

It has been a whirlwind two weeks for the SMU football program.

December 6th: Chad Morris abruptly announces he is leaving SMU to take the HC position at Arkansas. Chad takes almost his entire offensive coaching staff with him. A number of high profile recruits decommit and some also follow him to Arkansas. A huge gut shot to the entire SMU team just two weeks before their first bowl game for every player on the team considering they haven't been in 4 years.

December 7th: Associate head coach and running backs coach Jeff Traylor is announced as interim head coach and will lead the team in the Frisco Bowl.

The entire team loves coach Traylor and wants him to be the new permanent HC. They signed petitions and held player only meetings about it. They even met with the SMU AD about their wanting Traylor to be their next permanent head coach. They were extremely vocal about this.

December 10th:

Reports start coming out saying: Sonny Dykes will be the next head coach and the players went ballistic and were extremely vocal about their displeasure with this decision:

December 11th: Sonny Dykes is announced as head coach and offers Traylor to still coach the team through the bowl game

December 12th: Jeff Traylor announces that he will be leaving SMU to take a position under old HC Morris at his new school Arkansas. You can only imagine what type of impact this had on the SMU players, moral must had been very down.

December 14th: While new coach Dykes is on the road making home visits and high school visits trying to salvage any verbal commits that are still left it is announced that Graduate Assistant GJ Kinne will be calling the plays for SMU from the box for the Frisco Bowl. Apparently Kinne has been working with SMU QB Hicks to formulate the gameplan for the bowl game. A graduate assistant calling the plays and making the game plan.

December 16th: Interviews from players after practice confirm that it is literally just the players out there conducting practice for the upcoming bowl game. QB Hicks also says while they get down about the situation he still likes the energy he sees. That is putting up a good face, but the fact that he mentions the players are somewhat down about the situation tells me the morale is low. See the interviews for yourself, you can tell they haven't even been watching film:

Look this LT team won their last two games to make it to a bowl game and are very excited and motivated to be playing in a bowl game considering they didn't expect to even be here. Motivation to me is one of the biggest factors in bowl games. They have a pretty stout defence. While I could go deeper in an analysis of LT, this team played some very competitive and close games with some very good teams. I think they lost 3 very close games agaisnt good teams by a combined 3 points is what I read. They have a mobile QB that while not a great passer I think he can do well against a very young SMU defensive backfield which is already down an injured starter. A starting OT is also out for SMU for a violation of team rules and their Defense as a whole is AWFUL while the LT D is pretty damn good.

-------------- end of copy/paste ----------------

Line has dropped down to SMU -3.5.... opened at -5
Total hovering around 71, opened at 70

FWIW... ya gotta believe La Tech is gonna give all they got.
AND.... I wonder how frustrated SMU players (esp defense) are about how their practices, etc must be a bit disorganized, thinking about how this isn't their normal game prep (not even CLOSE)... things like that... right?

I'll start another thread for ppl to post their thoughts/picks on this gm.
