There is a huge article in today's local newspaper (www.thestate.com) about South Carolina's first round game against CSF. It's entitled "A MUST WIN" and is about how important a first round victory is today for the Gamecocks. Now I know it's not a revelation that today's game is important, it's just that the Cocks seem to be labeling this game a "must win" based upon their previous first round experience in Omaha.
The Cocks haven't won a first round game in Omaha since 1977, when they clipped Baylor 3-2 in 10 innings. The other first round loses were in 1981 (USC 5, OK ST 8); 1982 (USC 4 STFD 15); 1985 (USC 0 ARK 1 in 14 innings); 2002 (USC 0 GA TECH 11); and 2003 (USC 0 STFD 8).
As you can see, the Cocks haven't even scored a run in game one the last two tries, going down by a combined score of 19-0. For you prop players, all SEC catcher Landon Powell was quoted in today's paper as saying "our goal is to score a run in the first inning."
I was originally going to play CSF at +20 today, but after seeing today's articles, and having seen how good Matt Campbell can be, I think I'm just going to lay off and root for the Cocks.
