All-Star outfielder Vernon Wells was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday because of a strained right calf.

The Blue Jays activated second baseman Orlando Hudson from the DL before Wednesday night's game at San Francisco. He had been out since May 28 with tightness in his left hamstring.

Wells joins slugger Carlos Delgado on the DL, leaving the Blue Jays minus their top two power threats.



Wells left Tuesday night's 4-3 loss to the Giants in the fourth inning with tightness in his calf. It was diagnosed as a mild-to-severe strain Wednesday.

In 64 games, Wells was hitting .300 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs. The Blue Jays are last in the AL East and struggling to score runs.

Delgado, nursing a ribcage injury, hit off a tee Tuesday but is likely a week away from coming back.

Hudson's return will at least give the Blue Jays another solid bat in the lineup and improve their infield defense. In 43 games, he's hitting .262 with five homers and 21 RBIs.

The Blue Jays also announced that they have signed 25 players from the draft, including third-round picks Adam Lind and Danny Hill.

RHP Curt Schilling will make his regular start Wednesday and have an MRI on his right ankle after the game. Schilling sustained a bone bruise in an April 28 start against Tampa Bay. ``Curt threw a side session the other day without pain or medication, but we want to do the right thing.'' .

The New York Mets placed catcher Vance Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of a strained right hamstring, and purchased the contract of catcher Tom Wilson from Triple-A Norfolk.

Wilson was injured while trying to score in the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 7-2 win over Cleveland, and was forced to leave the game.

``I felt it right around third base,'' Wilson said. ``When you first do something, you think it's a cramp, but it's pretty sore today.''



After the game, Wilson said he didn't think the injury would land him on the disabled list, but said on Wednesday that the soreness worsened overnight.

``I've never even had an ache in my legs before,'' he said. ``All through the night, you're hoping it will get better, but it kept me up all night.''

Manager Art Howe said it could heal quickly, but the team would rather be cautious.

``Hamstrings can linger if you let them and don't take care of them properly, especially the first one,'' Howe said. ``We're being very careful because you don't want to take any risks there.''

Howe wasn't sure whether Wilson's injury would mean more action behind the plate for Mike Piazza, who has been playing the bulk of his games at first base.

``I don't know ... we'll see,'' Howe said.

Piazza started at first base again on Wednesday night, and Jason Phillips was the catcher.

Wilson is hitting .239 with two homers and 10 RBIs for the Mets.

Tom Wilson was hitting .313 with three homers and 11 RBIs for Norfolk, and was available for Wednesday night's game. He was released by Oakland on April 23, and signed a minor league deal with New York on May 7.

Wilson has hit .255 with 15 homers and 76 RBIs in 201 major league games with Oakland and Toronto.

To make room on their 40-man roster for Tom Wilson, the Mets designated outfielder Esix Snead for assignment. The Mets have 10 days to trade, release or send Snead outright to the minors.
