General Question on Game Clock

I'm sure others have posted this question before, but I was curious as to why it happens and what are the official rules for the game clock in the NBA. When a bucket is made the clock continues to run, which is fine and makes sense because the play generally results in the other team inbounding the ball relatively immediately. I was watching the clipper/laker game the other night and on several occasions there was a monster dunk, the ball gets either kicked my the dunker or deflected by the dunkee and the ball is then retrieved sometimes 4 and 5 seconds later by the inbounder. I swear I saw this happen at least 6 or seven times. The game clock continued to run, yet the shot clock is not started until the ball is inbounded. Over the course of a game, this can result in "loss of play", thus making an "over" harder to achieve. Luckily, that game ended up going over, which is what I played, but it can get damn frustrating watching those priceless seconds roll while nothing is happening. On the other hand, if you have the under, it can be great and you would love to see it happen as often as possible.

any thoughts or answers would be appreciated.
