A No. 14 national ranking, a Capital One Bowl showdown with Penn State and another upset loss to ... ugh ... Vanderbilt.
That's the fall football forecast for Georgia from Sporting News, whose preseason annual has hit newsstands.
Other Sporting News predictions of local interest:
? Georgia is No. 14 in the preseason Top 25, trailing two SEC teams: No. 2 LSU and No. 5 Florida. "Don't look now," the magazine says, "but Matthew Stafford might be the best quarterback in the SEC."
? Georgia Tech is 37th and projected to face Iowa in the Champs Sports Bowl.
? Georgia Tech's offensive line is the nation's fourth-strongest.
? In its 1-66 ranking of the BCS coaches, Georgia's Mark Richt is 23rd. Tech's Chan Gailey is 30th ? one spot ahead of Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer.
? Yellow Jackets who made SN's national player rankings: Tashard Choice (No. 6 tailback), Mike Cox (No. 7 fullback), Andrew Gardner (No. 10 offensive tackle), Philip Wheeler (No. 5 middle linebacker), Jamal Lewis (No. 6 strong safety) and Durant Brooks (No. 3 punter).
? Bulldogs who made SN's national player rankings: Kregg Lumpkin (No. 10 tailback) and Mikey Henderson (No. 4 return man).
? Tech's Wheeler and Georgia's Henderson were both second-team All-America choices.
? Bulldogs named first-team All-SEC: Lumpkin, Henderson and cornerback Paul Oliver (the magazine went to press before Oliver was ruled academically ineligible).
? The All-SEC second team included Stafford, who was also judged to have the strongest arm in the league.
? Jackets named first-team All-ACC: Gardner, Choice, Wheeler, Lewis and Brooks.
? Tech's Jon Tenuta was named the ACC's top defensive coordinator.
