The NASCAR racing schedule officially opens this weekend with the most prestigious race of the season, the Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway on Sunday (1 pm ET, FOX).
The race marks the beginning of the 2011 Sprint Cup Series, and drivers and racing fans alike are expecting one of the most competitive races in the 53-year history of Daytona 500, thanks to the surface of the legendary course being repaved in the off season.
Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are the co-favorites in NASCAR Odds at betED.com, both at +700.
Tony Stewart is at +850 and Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch round out the top 5 at +900.
How the new surface will affect racing was clearly evident in the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona last Saturday. The 75-lap non-points paying race had an astounding 28 lead changes, and racers reached speeds of 206 mph and more.
The repaving, which cost $20 million, was sparked by some problems at last year?s race. The 2010 Daytona 500 was marred by a pair of potholes that developed between the first and second turns about halfway through the race. The race was stopped twice for a total of 2.5 hours to allow for repairs.
The DIS had not been repaved since 1978.
Last year?s race was won by Jamie McMurray in a six-hour marathon that had to be completed at night because of the pothole problem.
Earnhardt Jr. won the pole for Sunday?s race after posting a lap at 186.089 mph, but will have to start from the rear of the field after crashing his primary car in Wednesday's practice.
