PHILADELPHIA - Although the Giants acquired center fielder Kenny Lofton on Sunday, they were continuing to look for offensive help, and were believed to be close to acquiring right fielder Cliff Floyd from the Montreal Expos.
A major-league official said he spoke to Expos general manager Omar Minaya this weekend, and Minaya said the team was close to sending Floyd to the Giants.
ESPN's Peter Gammons reported Monday night that he believed Floyd would go to San Francisco.
Floyd was acquired from the Florida Marlins on July 11 after he hit .287 with 18 homers and 57 RBI in 84 games. Floyd's contributions have been minimal to the Expos. He's hit .204 with two homers and three RBI in 14 games. However, the Expos have tumbled out of the race, and the Giants believe putting Floyd in a pennant race would rejuvenate him.
The Giants are one of five teams on Floyd's no-trade list, but it's believed Floyd would agree to the trade. The Giants are looking at Floyd with right fielder Reggie Sanders still not 100 percent with a strained right hamstring. Sanders has been out since last Monday, but is expected to play today in Philadelphia. The Giants want Floyd as insurance in case the oft-injured Sanders is gimpy the final two months of the season. Floyd will be a free agent at the end of the season.
