According to ESPN Radio, the NFL admitted that the Giants should have had another chance to kick the winning FG.They stated that 2 linemen were downfield.#65 and #69.But #69 was an eligible receiver .Because he was eligible, defensive pass interference should have been called along with the penalty against the offense for an ineligible man (#65) downfield. This would have resulted in offsetting penalties which would have given the Giants 1 untimed down.

That is correct. Called that sitting in front of my TV on Sunday.
However the way NYG's kick out come mostlikely the same. What a poor kicking game. Or one bad snapper. Or Both.

It was obvious that since each team committed penalties they were offsetting. The Giants should have been given another play. They were robbed but in truth they didn't deserve another chance to win the game. They got what they deserved.

it wasnt' so obvious, because if the guy who got fouled was the ineligible man downfield, then its not a penalty, so no offsetting penalty.

the ref, preseumably, thought it was the ineligible guy down field.

still, that's a pretty huge penalty to miss, especially in a game of this magnitude. the playoff crews are supposed to be the good ones.

Teamwork

Teamwork

The ref's are also in the playoffs. They are not in thier usuall crews. They are in All-Star crews made up of what are supposed to be the best guys at the best positions. This creates long pauses and ref's not making calls because they are scared of stepping on one another's feet. Watch any playoff game and notice the delay in every call. They are always looking across the field at the other guy hoping he will make the call.

This must change. If NFL is about teamwork and the team advancing not individual stats then why are the refs treated differently? The ref "teams" should remain together thru the playoffs and the best squad should advance to ref the Superbowl.
It seems like an easy soluition to me.

This is the classic swallowing the whistle syndrome in officiating. The rules change (they are not supposed to) when it gets down to the playoffs and towards the end of the big games.

The worst sport is the NHL playoffs, they completely call the game different in the playoffs.

2nd is the NBA and then college BB to a point, but college does a little better job.

Then comes FB college and pro.

These officials have been pounded with they should not determine the outcome of a game, but if a foul or penalty occurred they have to call it, not swallow the whistle.

And when a guy steps up and makes the call they are crucified by the mental giant commentators, who don't know the rules from a hole in the ground.

Believe me hockey is the absolute worst at this, but seeing it more and more in all the sports because of the ridiculous don't determine the outcome which translates to "who cheats best at the end of the game will win"

The game is played for 60 minutes or 4 quarters etc and the game should be called the same way for the same amount of time.

It was obvious because the the receiver, who was an OL named Siebert, was an eligible receiver. He reported to the ref. that he will be lined up at the receiver position. There was another Giant lineman who was illegally down field. So because the receiver was interfered with & there was also an ineligble man downfield, there was off-setting penalties. Game can't end on a defensive penalty, so Giants had another play. Doesn't matter because they would have probably missed it anyway.

On the course!
Kinda funny how in one game (NCAA Chmapionship) You hear, "Let them play! A flag should not come out in that situation!"

And in this game, it's "They should have thrown a flag!"

Somes aint never happy.......

Agree YYZ! Not saying refs dont deserve some bashing, but they are in a position in which they WILL NEVER PLEASE EVERYONE! The Giants got what they deserved...a LOSS!!

As I mentioned in an earlier post.

Bring the NBA officials to the NFL and send the current NFL officials to Wimbleton, they can sit around and drink tea and make "lines" calls.

It is hard to argue with those who say that Miami (NCAA) and the Giants DID NOT lose their games by the referee's calls. Wisdom says they had plenty of chances and didn't deserve to win. People say Miami should have been able to punch it in from the 2 and the Giants should not have squandered a 24 point league. True and true. However, bottom line is ref calls did cost Miaimi the game and probably cost the Giants the game. Whether you agree with the BCS call or not, the fact remains that when the ref threw the flag. it cost Miami the game. If he didn't throw it, they would have won. Same thing in Giant game, of course, providing they would have made the field goal. If they get the second chance and make the fg, they win the game. There is no getting around that the incorrect ruling by the refs cost them the game (if they made it). As yyz so cleverly pointed out, you can't have it both ways. That is true. But I don't think we should let the refs off the hook if they make an error. To say that the Canes or the Giants should have determined their own fate is true. But there is no denying that the refs decided the final outcome. Now. please, OSU fans, I am not denigrating your championship team in the least. But it is a fact that if the ref didn't throw the flag, Miami would have won the game (and that would also be argued right/wrong). And that is the point I am making. I am not taking sides on who the better team was or who deserved to win the game. It is simply a fact that the final outcome was decided by the yellow flag.
