Give us your preseason top 10 or more and a little reasoning. I know these rankings are kinda meaningless until October but it is fun and can put some good info on the table.

Here is mine:

1. Miami: Have to like a team that won the title last year, has Ken Dorsey at Qb and a ferocious front 7. Their schedule is wicked, but since when has Miami not played a tough sched??? Slight weakness could be in the secondary and a thinner than expected backfield without an injured Frank Gore. Keep this team off the cover of SI and they have a fighting chance.

2. Oklahoma: I give them #2 over Texas for these reasons:
1. Bob Stoops vs. Mack Brown 2. Have won last 2 meetings over Texas in convincing fashion. Losing Roy Williams and Rocky Calmus hurts, but Lance Mitchell and Pasha Jackson will shore up some of those holes. Any defense anchored by Jimmy Wilkerson and Tommy Harris is going to be stellar. Their downfall could be that they do not have a proven kicker and they need to find their offensive consistency. (keep in mind they signed the architecht of the Northwestern offense Kevin Wilson).

3. Texas: So much talent. So much Mack Brown. If Chris Simms can put out in a big game Texas can go all the way. Hard to bet against an offense that has Cedric Benson and a slew of talented receivers. Defense will be supreme. Kory Redding, Lee Jackson and Nathan Vasher should all be All-Americans. Potential road block for this team is once again Oklahoma and a very tough road schedule (Nebraska, Kansas State, North Carolina)

4. Tennessee: Came on very strong at the end of the year and then stubbed their toe vs. LSU. QB Casey Clausen is very solid and they will reload thier running machine with Jabari Greer and Cedric Houston. They do need to find a guy to complement Kelley Washington but TE Kelly Witten can be a major-league weapon. Big concern along the DL as they lost their entire front four but since when has finding capable defensive linemen been a problem at Tennessee? K Alex Walls should help them squeeze out a few tough games. Tough Sched could be a pothole (Miami, Florida and Georgia among others)

5. Florida State: Took their lumps last year and now return 19 starters. Chris Rix really put up some tremendous numbers last year and now has Anquan Boldin and Robert Morgan. Don't try to tackle RB Greg Jones. The patented pass rush still has a few question marks surrounding it, but the talent is there and it is a year older. Having a PK like Xavier Betita don't hurt. A 13 game schedule could take its toll but there is little not to like about this team.

6. Georgia: Don't laugh. I see a down year for Florida just by losing the o'l ballcoach alone. Ron Zook vs. Bobby Bowden and Larry Coker probably equals 2 losses alone. This team has beaten Tennessee 2 years in a row and returns 16 starters. The secondary play must step up if they want to beat the Vols and Gators but confidence abounds again in Athens as well as the talent. QB David Greene is solid and WR Terrence Edwards is a first rounder.

7. Washington: Ok, kinda a reach but this team has some serious talent. 15 returning starters among them: Qb Cody Pickett whom threw for 2403 yards as a true freshman with a shoulder injury. Gave us a taste of what they could do vs. Texas in the Holiday Bowl last year. Scoring points will not be a problem for this unit. The defense up front needs to grow up fast and the secondary needs to put last years melt down behind them. November schedule will make or break this squad.

8. Michigan: On the strength of their defense alone, this team should be able to sniff a victory in any game they play this year. The offense looks to be devoid of their typical playmakers but didn't we say that in 97??? This team needs to find a QB that can keep them from crashing and let their defense take over. Lots of changes among the assistants. Playing in the Big 10 does not hurt their cause. Huge opening game vs. Washington will set the tone of their season.

9. Florida: Ok, losing Steve Spurrier is a huge loss. Ron Zook and Ed Zaunbrecher take over. However talent abounds and Rex Grossman is a stud. What could undo this squad (beside playing Miami, FSU and Tennessee) will be holes in their Offensive and Defensive Line.

10. Colorado: For now. Their schedule will be tough. QB Craigh Ochs is very very good. 4 headed tailback monster will be hard to hide from. However their secondary which sucked last year; lost both safties. There is no depth behidn QB Ochs so hold your breath every time he gets hit buff fans. O-line and D-line will be very good. Note to Gary Barnett: don't fake anymore punts in your own territory.

11-20. we shall explain later:

11. Washington State
12. Nebraska
13. Virginia Tech
14. Ohio State
15. Oregon
16. LSU
17. Marshall
18. Michigan State
19. NC. State
20. Louisville
21. Oregon State
22. Auburn
23. Georgia Tech
24. Texas A&M
25. Penn State

Hey DNOMYAR - Great college football info and opinions. I saw that you are from Rehoboth Beach, DE. I grew up in Lewes and went to Cape Henlopen and now live in NYC. Did you grow up in slower lower or move there? Can't wait for the college football season to begin. Later.

Thanks for the plug cameroncrazy. I am a transplant to the area by way of Nebraska and San Diego. My soon to be ex-wife went to Cape too dude. You definitely did yourself a favor getting out of Slower Lower DE. Man this place sucks!!! Lewes is very nice but the traffic around Rt 1 sucks this time of year and Rehomo beach is not a good place to take my son to get an ice cream right now either. I am anxiously awaiting kickoff as well. Stop in and see us again soon. Everyone always has something good to add around here!!!

 kurby :bigear:

It will be September soon and you will have Rehoboth back to yourself. Summertime is too much around there. Fall is the best time of year - nice weather and football.

Will be back to the board more often come late August. Looking forward to another winning season. Talk to you soon.

objection of course

objection of course

I like the write ups and agree with your top 5 teams...just had to point out that last year's win for OU in dallas was not in in convincing fashion. the game was on the line in the 4th and OU's big players stepped up while our got their butts drilled in the end zone...the year before is a different story

I copied this from an email I sent to some friends...it says mainly what you point out and I am mainly asking how I can still get texas at 9 to 1 at an offshore:

breaking down the teams above them, I am trying to figure out how Texas is
not listed here at least at 6 to 1 if not 4 or 5.

Miami - after losing half of their starters in the first round (or so it
seemed), can they really come back and be that strong? after losing
mckinnie, buchanon, shockey (even though they have winslow jr.), reed,
rumph, portis, and davenport how can they be the favorite going into the
season? I know they were deep to begin with last year, they have a ton of
talent coming in, and Dorsey is coming back, but can they do it again
playing florida early in the swamp, playing tennessee in neyland, and va.
tech in dec?

OU - harris could be the big 12 defensive player of the year this year. but
you have to believe white is shaky at best and hybl sucks as we saw last
year...however, i am sure stoops will pull some shit in dallas in october
and find a way to out coach mack somehow

tenne - haynesworth, henderson, overstreet, and stallworth are gone which
leaves clausen and washington as the two big name players on the squad. mix
that in with inexperience in the backfield (although houston and davis are
supposed to be pretty freaking good) and I don't think they can get through
the sec, sec championship, and the fiesta bowl to do what they did in tempe
five years ago.

FSU - this is the one that scares me...they kind of dropped off the radar
last year and reloaded. now rix has a year of experience under his belt and
bolding is coming back for him. bowden also landed some big juco player
that will be another target for rix this coming season. on defense they
don't seem as strong and I think that should be their main problem this year
against quality qb's attacking their secondary.

also, all the books have the O/U regular season wins for the horns at 10...I
like this one and think I will bite. if you lose two, which is the most we
will lose, you are bringing your money back. I don't see the nebraska game
being the second scariest game next year for us, I think A&M will give us
another game like they did until the final 5 minutes or so last year. love
to hear any thoughts you guys have on this.

I mostly play the small school conferences so please don't laugh at my list. Will only include top 5 since I don't know as much as the rest about the top teams.

1. Florida St

Tough call with all these great teams. However not only was FSU an extemely young team last year they also had the most significant injuries of just about any team last year. I also understand that most years FSU just sleepwalks thru the ACC and wins it handily. The reason I have FSU as #1 is because this year they will be looking for payback from some of those teams that took out their frustrations on them last year (see UNC and NC St). I understand they still don't have a dominant DE, which has been a FSU staple the last decade. Also Rix was only a freshman last year I believe he can only get better. The return of a healthy Anquan Bolden(sp?) will be huge. Think the top 3 or 4 teams are all good candidates for #1. But with FSU coming off a rare down year I expect them to more motivated than usual and think they have the talent to win it. I don't think GA Tech will play them as tight as they usually do. Maryland is good but I don't think they will end up + double digits in turnovers like they did last year making their run thru the ACC that much easier.

2. Oklahoma

I love defense so I will have OU as #2. From everything I have read this defense should be lethal. They lose future hall of famer Roy Williams (sorry I am a D. Cowboy fan so I had to say that :) ) But my understanding is the defense should be as good or better. DT T. Harris will be fun to watch. Still not sold on their running game or QB situation. I do like their WR's though. As long as the offense just plays adequate(sp?)they should be a National Championship contender.

3. Miami

Yes they lost their awesome secondary from last year but the front 7 on D should be able to pick up the slack. One website season preview said that if Miami's DL isn't the best in the nation then their 2nd string DL is, yikes! They lost alot on the OL so much has been written if Dorsey can play great w/o one of the best OL's in the history of NCAAFB. I think he can but still think there will be a little regression. One interesting point at another website is that to win the Nat'l championship you have to have talent and a little bit of luck. OU fit this 2 years ago and Miami did a little when they beat BC on the infamous endzone intro. Talentwise they are a clear Nat'l championship contender but I just see them falling short. FSU will be looking for revenge. As bad as Miami whipped FSU last year the stats on the game were actually pretty even. Rix is better now and most of the studs in the Miami secondary are gone, that will be a great game.

4. Florida

Can't dismiss this team even w/o Spurrier. I don't think enough was mentioned about how much RB E. Graham means to this team. Don't think it was a coincidence that their only 2 losses last year were games he didn't play. I know they have to face TENN in Tennessee. However Tenn won last year in the swamp and I think FLA can return the favor this year but it won't be easy. Alot of times teams step up their play when a star player is injured. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see FLA step up their play a little w/o Spurrier and I think QB Grossman is a clear heisman candidate.

5. Tennessee

Think Fulmer is a great coach and the Clausen to Washington connection should be lethal. They lost alot on their DL but have some up and comers to plug in. I think a huge reason they beat FLA in the swamp last year was the fact they had an incredible rush D and FLA was w/o RB Grahahm. Think TEN and FLA are about equal talentwise. But I will still place FLA one spot above the Vols.

Honorable mention goes to:

Texas
Until they win a big game they don't deserve to be in any top5 list IMO.

Washington
Think they will win the Pac10 this year and I will have my $ on them early in the year vs Michigan despite Michigan looking for payback from last year.

That's the best I can do. If anyone wants to talk about the top MAC. Sunbelt, WAC, CONF USA, and MWC teams let me know as that is where the majority of my bets come from.

Good luck to all this season!

Came up w/ my list. I wouldn't call this so much my Preseason Top 10, but instead my gut instinct as to what the Top 10 will be heading into the bowl season. Schedule is factored into my list quite a bit. That said, the expanded schedule w/ more inter-regional gms means that NO ONE goes thru the regular season unbeaten imo. Here goes nuttin:

1) Colorado
2) Oregon
3) Texas
4) Tenn
5) Mich St
6) Miami FL
7) Oklahoma
8) Florida St
9) Florida
10) Boston College
11) Virginia Tech
12) Michigan
13) North Carolina St
14) Oregon St
15) Texas A&M
