In what might be QB Ben Roethlisberger?s last game, his Miami Red Hawks travel to Mobile, Alabama to take on the Louisville Cardinals in the GMAC Bowl.
Big Ben was the MAC Conference MVP and 3rd Team AP All American. Roethlisberger and the Miami offense set all kind of school records as he completed 69% of his passes for 4,110 yards and 33 touchdowns. Although the offense gets all the accolades averaging 42.5 points per game, the defense wasn?t too bad as they allowed only 18.8 points per game. In case you don?t have a calculator handy that equates to a 23.7 point per game average margin of victory.
Miami lost only one game this season, that there opening game of the year at Iowa 21-3. Miami moved the ball against a tough Iowa defense, but couldn?t find the end zone. They netted 304 total offensive yards but four costly turnovers killed the Red Hawks. Since that game, the Miami offense has been unstoppable scoring 40 or more points in 10 of the 12 games.
With such a high margin of victory average, the Red Hawks were very successful against the line. They posted a 9-4 ATS record. In somewhat of a surprise, in the seven games that had posted totals, they went over only in four of the games.
One interesting not is that Miami finished their season playing three straight road games. The last one was a 49-27 pasting of a very good BG team, at BG. Not only was Miami playing their third straight roadie, they were also facing revenge from defeating BG earlier in the season. The Miami offense showed BG that they were no match as the Red Hawks put up 576 total offensive yards that included 440 through the air.
New Louisville coach Bobby Petrino did an excellent job as he guided the Cardinals to a 9-3 record. However, they could only go .500 against the spread with a 6-6 ATS mark.
Louisville did finish the season on a winning note as they won and covered their final two games. These two wins were needed as they had lost the previous two games, at home to Memphis and at TCU. The Louisville offense showed a lot of spark in those final two games as they scored a combined 109 points. However, they did allow 85 points.
If Louisville has any chance against Miami they better bring their ?A? game on defense. During the season, the Louisville defense couldn?t stop opponents as they allowed 26 points per game. There defense showed severe weakness in their final two games, and hopefully, for Cardinal fans they?ll find a way to stop Big Ben. If not it will be a long night.
