NL East

ATLANTA BRAVES (92-70) Don?t think it?s automatic to win the division this season. Mike Hampton is 7-1 vs Florida but 1-5 against Arizona, and won?t replace Millwood and Glavine. John Smoltz IS the bullpen. Greg Maddux is 0-5 vs Arizona. The left side of the infield is under construction, with 3B Mark DeRosa and 2B Marcus Giles. SS Rafael Furcal and CF Andruw Jones strikeout too much. Friday has been good to the Braves, sporting a 23-4 record. The Braves are just 1-8 at Ted Turner Field vs Arizona. Atlanta is 15-3 against the AL.

PHILADELPHIS PHILLIES (89-73) The Phils need to start better than 9-19, which dug them too big a hole. 1B Jim Thome and 3B David Bell will rock Veterans Stadium. Kevin Millwood, with a 9-0 record in August, and Randy Wolf, who is 3-9 in April, could BOTH win 20. Jose Mesa goes for third 40-save season, Carlos Silva is setup man. LF Pat Burrell hits 40 HR, too. In interleague play, the Phillies are 7-2 on the road vs the AL.

NEW YORK METS (88-72) Tom Glavine, who is 6-1 against Florida and 16-4 at Cincinnati, will be the ace over Al Leiter. Problems are not advancing runners and running poor when on base. C Mike Piazza is beat up. LF Cliff Floyd looks for a 30 HR/100 RBI season on a team with the worst outfield production in the NL in 2002. RF Jeromy Burnitz doesn?t cut it. Should a DH?er arise, the Mets are 13-2 in Game #2. Steve Trachsel is 6-21 in road day starts. P Pedro Astacio is 11-3 vs Florida. New York is 16-3 vs Milwaukee at Shea Stadium. The Mets can?t win at San Francisco, with an 0-10 record.

FLORIDA MARLINS (78-84) Look for the Fish to concentrate more on pitching without the luxury of a 30-homer player. The problem being that their starting three (A.J. Burnett, Josh Beckett and Brad Penny) come off the DL. Did you know Florida led the majors in stolen bases last year? Brandon Looper CAN close. The Marlins are only 10-40 on the road Wednesday. Friday isn?t any better, as they are 3-22, away. A.J. Burnett is 6-0 in interleague play.

MONTREAL EXPOS (73-89) The Expos will have a 25-day road trip in June (including Puerto Rico) and 27 of their last 37 games away. Javier Vazquez and Tony Armas, Jr., who is 2-8 vs Florida, 3-10 in July, 0-6 against Florida and 2-12 UNDER in interleague play, will share the ace ?title? with Colon gone. 2B Jose Vidro hits .300 five years running. RF Vladimir Guerrero swings at everything and STILL hits. Montreal is only 16-45 on the road Sunday. The Expos are 4-14 vs San Diego. Success has come against Pittsburgh, with a 6-1 mark.

NL Central

ST LOUIS CARDINALS (91-71) 3B Scott Rolen gets a full season to carry team at Busch. RF J.D. Drew comes off knee surgery. Jason Isringhausen comes off offseason shoulder surgery. 1B Tino Martinez can?t hit lefties?watch for platooning. 2B Fernando Vina swings at the first pitch and average is dropping. Matt Morris is 9-1 in August. Mondays are fun, with a 13-1 mark at Busch. The Cards are 5-1 vs hated Kansas City. They OWN San Diego with a 19-2 record. Joey Hamilton is 9-2 vs Los Angeles.

HOUSTON ASTROS (90-72) Jeff Kent and the Killer B?s are built for Minute Maid Park. Wade Miller is 10-1 against Milwaukee and 5-0 away in the series, and Roy Oswalt, who?s 11-1 in August and 5-0 vs Cincinnati, lead the staff. Billy Wagner can save 40+ games this year with Octavio Dotel as setup man. How will 1B Jeff Bagwell come back from shoulder rehab? RF Richard Hildago is in a two-season slump. Peter Munro is 5-0 against Milwaukee.

CHICAGO CUBS (83-79) The Cubs are building for the future with their farm system (instead of trading it away). Patience isn?t a virtue in Chicago?the Cubs struck out 1,269 times. How can Mark Belhorn NOT start with 27 HR?s? OF Sammy Sosa hit .288, a drop of 40 points. Manager Dusty Baker has his hands full. Kerry Wood likes the night in Chicago, where he?s 8-2. P Matt Clement is 4-12 against Montreal. The Cubs hate St. Louis, where they are 3-17.

CINCINNATI REDS (80-82) CF Ken Griffey, Jr. is IN. The dimensions at the Great American Ballpark will lead to fewer HR?s?on a team that had the worst batting average with runners in scoring position. Chris Reitsma is 4-18 at home. Jimmy Haynes is 1-5 vs Houston. Reliever Scott Sullivan has led the Reds in games played five straight years, and it?s showing (elbow, shoulder). The Reds are 7-1 at Los Angeles. Interleague play shows Cincy at 2-10. Ryan Dempster is 12-3 in home day starts, 5-1 against the Mets but just 1-7 vs Atlanta and 0-5 vs San Francisco. Like most, they have success at Milwaukee with an 8-1 mark.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (72-90) The Bucs had the worst on-base percentage in the league in 2002. C Jason Kendall must regain his power stroke. Rotation of Kris Benson, Kip Wells and Josh Fogg shows promise. Mike Williams could get 50 saves. LF Brian Giles only player to hit over 18 HR?s last year. Thursday?s are bad days with an 8-31 mark, 3-24 on the road. Wednesday is no better at 4-20 on the road. The Pirates are 3-11 on turf. Pittsburgh is 15-4 against Milwaukee and 6-1 on the road. During interleague play, their record is just 3-9. And only 1-8 vs St. Louis.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS (61-101) It?s eleven straight years under .500. 1B Richie Sexon WILL hit 40 HR, knock in 100. RF Jeffrey Hammonds didn?t homer after July. LF Geoff Jenkins comes off an ankle injury?is .300 and 30 HR?s possible? Reliever Mike DeJean converts most saves, again. The Brew Crew is 5-32 on the road Wednesday. Glendon Rusch is 0-6 vs Pittsburgh, 0-5 against Atlanta, but 7-1 against the Cubs. P Ben Sheets, who could be the ace, is 5-0 against the Cubs. The Brewers are just 2-10 vs the AL.

NL West

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (90-72) The D-Backs have Randy Johnson, 14-0 against Milwaukee, 6-0 against Florida, 11-1 vs San Diego, 7-1 vs Colorado and 7-1 against Philadelphia, Curt Schilling, 5-0 against San Diego and 6-0 against Los Angeles?and not-exactly. They are even starting reliever Byung-Hyun Kim. OF Luis Gonzalez had 57 HR?s two years ago and 29 LESS last year. 2B Junior Spivey was the ONLY player to hit .300. SS Tony Womack is in a contract year. The D-Backs are 19-3 vs Colorado and 15-1 in the series at the BOB. They carry an 11-1 record against Cincinnati, 6-0 on the road.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (88-74) Jeff Kent won?t be kicked around anymore (he?s in Houston). And manager Felipe Alou is in charge. Jason Schmidt, 6-1 vs Colorado, looks to be the ace, along with tomorrow?s ace, Damian Moss. CF Ray Durham is a .300 leadoff hitter. 3B Edgardo Alfonzo was a .330 hitter with RISP and comes from the Mets. The G-Men are 7-1 at home Tuesday and 35-10 at PacBell on Monday. Kirk Rueter is 14-3 in night games. San Francisco is 11-1 at Houston. The Giants are 6-0 against the Mets.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (87-75) The Dodgers were last in the NL in walks and need MORE runs. Darren Dreifort hasn?t pitched since June 2001. Kevin Brown comes off back and elbow surgery. Can Eric Gagne come off his first season as a closer (77 appearances) strong? OF Shawn Green only 30+ HR man. The Dodgers love to be home on Saturday where they are 21-4. Hideo Nomo is 10-3 vs San Francisco and 8-0 away, in the series, 1-10 against Florida and 10-1 on the road in July. LA has won 10 of 12 against Milwaukee. Andy Ashby is 8-2 vs the Cubs.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (76-86) RF Phil Nevin is OUT. Rondell White comes from the Yankees. Brian Lawrence looks to lead. Staff gives up two more runs away than at Qualcomm. Trevor Hoffman will flirt with 50 saves. CF Mark Kotsay will have a breakout year. 1B Ryan Klesko only Padre with 20 + HR?s. San Diego is just 5-27 at Arizona. P Adam Eaton is 10-3 in day starts.

COLORADO ROCKIES (75-87) How effective will RF Larry Walker be after six weeks as trade bait? The Rockies pitching staff got rocked with only ONE complete game last season. Denny Neagle is 1-5 against Los Angeles. C Charles Johnson can help the ?D? throwing out baserunners. Sophomores Jason Jennings and Denny Stark will lead the pitching staff. Midweek is rough as the Rockies are 5-16 on the road Wednesday. They are a slow starter at 5-18 opening a road trip. Denny Stark is 8-1 at home. Colorado is 7-2 against Milwaukee and 6-0 at home.

NEW YORK YANKEES (99-63) The Yanks have picked up OF Hidiki Matsui, ?Godzilla?, and Jose Contreras from Cuba. Roger Clemens, 19-2 at Yankee Stadium and 26-8 vs Cleveland, will win No. 300. David Wells, 17-4 vs Cleveland, likes the heat with an 11-1 road mark in July, and will feel it, and we?ll see if Jeff Weaver, 3-13 in April, but 9-1 against the NL, gets hammered in New York or sets himself up to win the Cy Young. 2B Alfonso Soriano gets even better. The Yanks OWN Thursday, with 15-1 mark at home. Mike Mussina is 5-0 against Toronto and 18-2 vs Minnesota. Andy Pettitte is 9-2 at home in August, 9-1 against Tampa Bay, 14-4 against Baltimore and 5-1 vs Boston. New York is 16-3 at home vs Tampa Bay. The Yankees are 21-6 vs Minnesota and 11-1 against Kansas City, 6-0 on the road.

BOSTON RED SOX (90-72) The Bosox are built around stats. They are going to employ a closer-by-committee attitude. Watch for the offense to be more patient. SS Nomar Garciaparra is the final year of his contract (free agent?). John Burkett, 0-5 against the Yankees, can?t beat good teams. They are just 4-12 at Yankee Stadium. Will CF Johnny Damon have a full season (of production)? If a DH?er comes up, the Red Sox are 12-0 in Game #1. Pedro Martinez is 5-0 vs Kansas City, and starts strong, with a 21-7 mark in April, 7-1 against Baltimore, 9-1 vs Cleveland and 10-0 against Seattle. Derek Lowe has trouble up north, with a 1-5 record at Toronto. The Sox are 10-2 at Baltimore. Interleague play means trouble at 5-13. They love playing Tampa Bay, with a record of 29-7. Turf games have been a plus, with a 17-5 mark.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (79-83) The Jays have had six managers in six seasons, not a receipe for ?W??s. Manager Carlos Tosca?s weakness is pulling pitchers too soon. Roy Halladay leads the staff, but no one else pitches enough innings (bullpen woes). Patience is needed?the team struck out 1,142 times. Toronto OWNS Baltimore with a 25-6 record. Cory Lidle starts slow, but finishes strong, with a 10-1 mark in August.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (72-90) After a 63-63 record, the Birds closed 4-32. 2003 is another rebuilding season, rather than contending. Now matter how promising the young pitchers are, the team still has to score more. When was the last time they had a clean-up hitter? Catching is weak. 1B David Segui is H-U-G-E. Omar Daal is the first lefty in the rotation in five years. DH?s are NOT for the Birds, as they are 1-12 in Game #1 and 2-12 in the nightcap. Jason Johnson is 0-7 vs Toronto. Scott Erickson is 16-4 against Detroit. Sidney Ponson is 6-1 vs Minnesota. The O?s have won 11 of 13 against Kansas City. But, have lost 12 of 16 vs Oakland. Baltimore shouldn?t mess with Texas, with a 3-13 mark. The Orioles have dominated Minnesota over the years, with a 42-12 series record.

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (68-94) ?Sweet Lou? Piniella is in the dugout for the Rays. 1B Aubrey Huff is a star in the making. Rid of hefty contract and hefty DH Greg Vaughn. The starting pitchers will go longer than usual because there is LESS of a bullpen. OF Ben Grieve hit 19 HR?s?and may come alive in last contract year. Tampa Bay has ?quit? in them, with a 4-17 mark in the last game of a road trip. The D-Rays have a 5-19 road record on Friday and are 9-27 away on Tuesday. Tampa is 0-5 against Minnesota. There?s no Ray of hope with a 5-15 record at Tropicana Field vs Seattle. Lefties are 21-8 against the Devil Rays.

AL Central

MINNESOTA TWINS (88-74) OF Torii Hunter could use some patience at the plate. Watch for 1B Doug Mientkiewicz to have a solid year, after employing a Clemens-type work ethic. The bullpen is in the hands of LaTroy Hawkins. Is 3B Corey Koskie on the decline? Eric Milton is 22-8 in road day starts, 12-2 vs Kansas City and 1-5 vs Seattle. The Twins start strong, with a 21-5 mark in the first game of a homestand. Rick Reed is 13-1 in April. Kyle Lohse is 5-0 vs White Sox. Joe Mays is 6-0 against Detroit. Brad Radke is 8-0 vs Detroit and 12-2 at Kansas City. Minnesota is 7-1 at The Metrodome vs Cleveland. They have won eight straight against Detroit and five straight away, in the series. The Twins have won six of seven against Toronto.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX (87-75) Frank Thomas has a new contract?and has no more excuses. The Pale Hose starters hit 165 HR?s. The catching is in a sorry state, just the opposite of a strong bullpen. SS Jose Valentin hit just .152 from the left side. Mark Buehrle, 7-2 vs Minnesota, and Bartolo Colon could cause an upset in this division. The White Sox are 11-3 in Game #2 of a DH. Chicago wins at Detroit, with a 14-4 record. But, loses at Oakland, 0-9.

CLEVELAND INDIANS (70-92) The Indians are on the warpath, with three managers over the past year?enter Eric Wedge. Jim Thome hit 52 homers and knocked in 118?and is in Philly. DH Ellis Burks will be the big bat. C.C. Sabathia, 7-2 vs Kansas City and 6-2 at Jacobs Field in the series, needs to get off to a good start. Not much else proven on the mound. The Tribe is 3-10 on the road Tuesday. They win against Tampa Bay, with a 17-5 record.

DETROIT TIGERS (66-96) This club hasn?t had a winning season since 1993?and this won?t be one, either. The Tigers led the AL in errors last season. The pitchers on the roster had 82 starts between them last year. OF Bobby Higginson, 1B Carlos Pena and Shane Halter let the team with a combined 32 HR?s. Detroit is just 9-29 on the road Wednesday. Steve Sparks, 5-1 against Cleveland, is just 2-12 in road day starts and scoring is up at home when he pitches vs NL, with a 5-0 OVER mark. The Tigers are only 5-26 on turf. Success has come against Texas, at 5-1. Failure (more) vs Toronto, with a 2-12 record.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS (62-100) For the second straight year, the Royals will lose 100 games. But the foundation IS being laid for success. 1B Mike Sweeney is the MAN in KC. CF Carlos Beltran must get hits before the All-Star break. Paul Byrd had 17 wins?and is gone. Will LF Raul Ibanez have back-to-back strong years? Kansas City is 8-29 on the road Friday, 5-20 away Wednesday. They get off to a rough start at Kauffman Stadium, just 5-15 in the first game of a homestand. The Royals are 1-8 at Anaheim. Interleague play is a downer, with a 5-13 mark. But, they win at home vs Cleveland, with 7 of 9 victories.

AL West

OAKLAND ATHLETICS (94-68) The A?s 3.68 ERA led the AL, but with a TIGHT budget, can Barry Zito, 20-1 at Network Associates Coliseum and 6-0 vs Texas, Tim Hudson, 16-3 in home day starts, 6-0 vs Baltimore, 6-1 against Toronto and 11-3 vs Anaheim, and Mark Mulder, 2-5 at home, 17-4 in home day starts, 5-1 vs Cleveland, 5-0 against Tampa Bay and 9-1 in interleague play, carry the team? And what will first year manager Ken Macha do? Don?t look for help in the form of spending $$$. Bullpen is suspect. SS-MVP Miguel Tejada is in his final year (of his contract). Oakland is 14-2 vs White Sox. As usual, they beat Tampa Bay, with a 22-5 mark. In interleague play, they are 20-5 at home and 24-3 vs NL. Games are low scoring against hated San Francisco, 1-11 UNDER and 0-9 UNDER on the road.

ANAHEIM ANGELS (90-72) Can the Angels continue their trend of come-from- behind wins? Watch for an attitude adjustment after winning the World Series?casualness could cause casualties. Jarrod Washburn, 5-1 vs Texas, is the ace. Outfielders and bench strength are in short supply. Wild card? Scott Schoenweis is 0-5 vs Seattle. Aaron Sele gets off to a quick start with a 21-7 mark in April, 10-1 vs Oakland, 6-0 against Tampa Bay and 15-3 vs Minnesota. Ramon Ortiz is 9-1 vs Texas. The Halos are 7-2 vs Seattle. Anaheim, as most everyone, has had success against Tampa Bay, at 15-3. The Angels are 11-3 vs Toronto.

SEATTLE MARINERS (88-74) The M?s stay in third without Manager Lou. Freddy Garcia is 9-1 in home day starts, 14-3 in day starts, 6-0 against Tampa Bay and 7-1 vs Anaheim, but fell apart after the Break with a 5-5 record. Jamie Moyer, 10-3 against Texas, 5-0 against Cleveland, 4-0 at home in the series, 5-0 at Tampa Bay and OWNS Baltimore at 13-0, and Joel Pineiro, 10-2 in August, can make up the slack (if there is any). OF Ichiro Suzuki is still an all-star. DH Edgar Martinez near dusk and played only 97 games last season. Seattle is just 2-9 away Saturday and 1-8 on the road Tuesday. They love New York, with a 11-1 record there. The Mariners are 14-3 at Toronto. They are 16-1 at Safeco Field against Baltimore. Defense is at a premium vs the NL, with a 3-13-2 UNDER record at home.

TEXAS RANGERS (80-82) Buck Showalter manages again in Arlington. Chan Ho Park is 14-3 at home in September, 12-4 in June, and the only known on the mound, Joaquin Benoit will win when he throws strikes. Texas can score, but can?t hold, losing the lead in 46 games they ended up losing and blowing 33 saves. Ugueth Urbina can provide bullpen help. Texas is a slow starter, with a 4-16 road record Monday. Rob Bell is just 2-10 in August.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
thanks for the posting!

thanks for the posting!

Just wonder about it. Saw a few mistakes, but I don't recall much of this stuff anyways.... So not sure how accurate all this is. Most of it looks pretty close tho..

"Steve Trachsel is 6-21 in road day starts"

---last 3 seasons, his team (more important to us bettors than official w/l record) was 5-6 in his road day starts. Maybe he means home day starts, where his team last three seasons went 5-14 when he started. A money train I rode last season!

"The dimensions at the Great American Ballpark will lead to fewer HR?s"

---no, the opposite!

but thanks again. I wrote some down. Good luck Dr.! and keep
em coming.
