A few days ago, our neighbors and good friends suffered unbearable tragedy. Both of them attempted suicide. The mom tried on thurs. morning, the dad thurs. nite. My wife visited her in the hospital and she said her kids would be better off with her life insurance $ than with her. Horrible, but I digress. Their daughters are 16 and 19 years old. I woke up Sat. AM with a terrible thought that they may have no food. Thank God, both attempts were unsuccessful, but who knows when/if either parent will return home. We told the girls after the police left, if they need anything knock on our door or call. The girls are fairly shy, and after this awful event, I began to have a feeling that they may have nothing to eat or drink. I went to Whole Foods and the Manager, a saint named Chris Lovett, noticed I was tearing up in the check out line. I told him about the girls and he immediately got me a $100 gift card for their groceries. He also put me in touch with two organizations locally that they donate unused food to. If you have the means and a Whole Foods near you, go there today and spend some cash. They truly went above and beyond, insisting I not pay for the girls groceries. Chris even walked me to the frozen foods area where I could get the most bang for my buck, or their buck. Will never shop anywhere else if I can help it.

Thanks everyone, but the real thanks goes to Chris Lovett and Whole Foods. I just received an email from Chris's boss stating that they would be more than happy to provide them food until things get "a little more situated". Wow. She also states that she would like to "donate a fully cooked meal to the family for Thanksgiving". There are some very good people in this world and I have been fortunate enough to meet these two. Need more like them.

Great story to make you feel better and have some faith in people.

On another note - does the mom that tried to kill herself know how dumb she is?
In a suicide, life insurance isn't paid out.
typically a couple of years wait, for exactly the reason we see in this incident.

Actually, Marine, what you said isn't true.

The suicide exclusion in life insurance only extends for the first 2 years after you buy the policy. The theory is, nobody will buy the policy, wait 2 years, and then commit suicide.

interesting. Last year someone I know did the dirty to themselves, and the life ins. didn't pony up and put a hold on the funds being paid out.
probably different policies/providers.

Found this:

Most private insurance policies have a 2-year suicide exclusion period. After that, the policy must pay the benefit regardless of manner of death.

The exception to the 2-year suicide clause is that some employer-provided group life policies do not contain such a clause. The rationale is simple: Employees are provided several "free" benefits as a way of retaining quality people and most employees who would consider suicide would not bother with going out and consider purchasing a life insurance policy, knowing full well that there would be no death benefit within the first two years of having the policy

Maybe it was an employer provided group life policy?
