TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- A win at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday would give Jeff Gordon sole possession of sixth place on NASCAR's career victories list.
He doesn't expect to climb much higher than that, though.
Gordon, who has 76 wins, can pass Cale Yarborough (83), and Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip (tied at 84) in three years if he maintains his average of 3.5 wins a season.
But the four-time series champion said he'll never catch David Pearson's mark of 105 victories, second on the list to Richard Petty's 200.
``I guarantee I won't be passing David Pearson,'' he said. ``I hope I can get above my average and win some more races, I'd love to do that. But I know I don't plan on racing until I'm 45. I've had a great career and I want to keep going as long as I'm healthy and having a good time with a competitive team.
``But as this sport is changing and with fatherhood around the corner, I don't think I'm going to want to be at that competitive level -- or be out there and not be competitive -- at that age.''
Gordon's wife is expecting their first child, a girl due this summer.
