basically it says that cablevision has received notification that i was transmitted copyright information over the internet without permisson. I think it was a version of House MD i dl. Well the NBC Universal says i should send a prompt response about this matter. Has anyone gotten something like this from cablevision? Shoudl i respond or should i ignore it and not dl anything?

Cablevision says the will not reveal my identity until they are required by law to. THey say i could or could not be sued. They would not sue me for dl one episode of house woudl they?

I would think they have bigger fish to fry. I would at least contact them to see what the problem is?

Or... they could be using you as an example maybe?

"this is what happens when you DL copyrighted items"

Not true....the RIAA & its friends go after the little guy.

They may soon send you a letter telling you they are going to be suing you & offering you a chance to settle before hand for a pre-determined amount anywhere from 1500 to 3000 bucks.

the letter from cablevision said they will not give them my name unless they have to legally. it says that nbc may or may not take legal action. I see no reason to contact them bc i know exactly what they are talking about. I am not going to admit to anything. according to the letter i have only one file i downloaded illegally so. I will take my chances they will go after me for one eposide of House.

I kind of like the team whose coach got ran out after 17 years. I think they will give a maximum effort. Hopefully it will be enough

We both work fulltime and live out in the sticks, UPS is afraid too even venture to these parts....
Addys on the way, we appreciate it, my 11 yr old daughter is licking her chops!

Cool. I think I can do it online- I'm fairly lazy. You know, it never seems like a good time to clean out the garage sort of deal. I'll try and get them to you before the New Year. Dealing w/an ice storm in KC and have yet to buy gifts. It may be another year for the "Universal Gift Certificate" CASH. Why dictate were someone can spend unless you're gifting a crack head? Never understood that. Anyway, the Lobsta's were killer. My cat, Vito, liked them as well- especially when they were still alive :mj07: I appreciate honorable men. I'm dealing w/a few who are not @ the moment :box2: I wish I could share some of the tales. Man, unbelievable.:00x4

:mj22: Sorry about that chalk.

I have some friends w/the cable co. Don't snake it if your in a multi-unit place :SIB . One of my buddies actually got sued by Time Warner- he lived in a apt. It is very rare. The litigation expense from Cable/NBC in your situation would be ridiculously costly. Cablevision is just covering their ass. Unless your pirating palates of DVD's, I would toss that notice directly in the trash. If you are served w/Certified Mail (don't answer the door :142smilie ) then you may consider seeking advice. 99% chance this is a scare tactic so you'll come on forums like this and discourage it. Hopefully, you won't be that 1% example. I have been and it tends to piss you off. GL

I know a guy that had to pay 10k to Direct tv. Ended up mortgaging his house for it. Lawyer told him he would lose everything if he went to court over it. Moral of the story....dont use your credit card.

The DTV scandal was a PURE EXTORTION tactic. I feel sorry for the suckers that paid them a cent. I NEVER heard of a case where a "letter" receiver was taken to court.

The statute of limitations ran out rather quickly on these cases, with DTV only receiving money from "volunteer" parties.

An actual "no lose" situation on their part. They sent out 100,000 leters , at a bulk mailing rate, for very little investment. If only 1 % of the letter receivers "ponied up" ANYTHING, it was a profitable venture.

Funny thing was, some people actually bought some of these " card altering devices" for legitimate projects.

I knew of a doctor that bought a couple of ISO programmers to work on a "key card" security system back in the day. His lawyer had a field day with the extortion letter.

Screw 'em !!
