I mean really. Can this guy be serious? Going off on the one person in this administration that receives anything near respect worldwide? Blaming Powell for 'diplomatic failure' and giving the neo-cons who manage to piss off friends and foes alike a free pass? LMFAO!

The title *should* be: Gingrich blasts Powell for failing to perform the impossible task of rehabilitating America's image after Bush, Rumsfeld and Co. got through with it.

Gingrich blasts 'diplomatic failure' at State Department
White House defends Powell

The White House defended Secretary of State Colin Powell and the State Department.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich blasted the State Department Tuesday for a series of what he described as diplomatic failures leading up to the war with Iraq and said that pattern was poised to repeat itself.

In a speech delivered at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank in Washington, Gingrich contrasted the experience of the State Department with the Defense Department. He said the State Department had failed in its efforts to apply diplomatic pressure to convince Iraq to disarm and comply with U.N. resolutions, and that it was time for "bold, dramatic change" at the department.

"The last seven months have involved six months of diplomatic failure and one month of military success," said Gingrich, who sits on a Pentagon advisory committee. "The first days after military victory indicate the pattern of diplomatic failure is beginning once again and threatens to undo the effects of military victory."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called Powell "an extraordinary figure" but said the institution was "broken."
Gingrich, a favorite of many conservatives, faulted Secretary of State Colin Powell for saying he would visit Syria, which the Bush administration has accused of aiding members of the fallen regime of Iraq's Saddam Hussein. Over the weekend, that criticism eased and President Bush said Syria has shown signs of cooperation.

"The concept of the American secretary of state going to Damascus to meet with a terrorist-supporting, secret-police-wielding dictator is ludicrous," said Gingrich, who resigned the speakership under fire in 1999. He had represented Georgia as a Republican congressman. "The United States military has created an opportunity to apply genuine economic, diplomatic and political pressure on Syria."

The White House, however, expressed its confidence in Powell.

"The actions of Secretary Powell and the Department of State are the president's actions," White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Tuesday. "They carry out the president's directions and they do so very ably and professionally. The nation and the president are fortunate to have a secretary of state as ... strong as Secretary Powell."

Gingrich's comments were first reported in The Washington Post, which featured a front-page story Tuesday examining what it described as rivalries and tensions between the State and Defense departments.

In his speech, Gingrich said he was not criticizing personalities, but "effectiveness." And he had some praise for Powell.

"I think Secretary Powell is an extraordinary figure and I think he's a very effective advocate, but I think he is currently presiding over an institution that's broken," Gingrich said.

I don't think that anyone, even the staunchest of republicans, gives a damn' what Newt thinks about this or anything else. He has had his 15 minutes and didn't use it very well.

i am not a big fan of Newt either.i saw dick morris tonight on o'reilly's show & he thinks that newt's attack on powell is to try to kill any hope powell may have for future office(president ?).morris thinks that consevative people want to make sure that powell, being a moderate, has no chance of getting the republican nomination.i don't know if he is right but it makes sense to me.

OK...just for fun..feeling bored.

"gotta love the Newtster

Are you speaking of the dictatorships in the Middle East, Russia, France, Germany, China.....etc. Personally, I'm not interested in pleasing nor concerned about gaining the respect of the "thinkers" in these countries.

Blaming Powell for 'diplomatic failure' and giving the neo-cons who manage to piss off friends and foes alike a free pass? LMFAO!

I guess what you are saying is that you "disagree" with the following statement from the newtster. "The last seven months have involved six months of diplomatic failure(TRUE AS TRUE GETS or were the inspections going to work...etc) and one month of military success," said Gingrich, who sits on a Pentagon advisory committee. "The first days after military victory indicate the pattern of diplomatic failure is beginning once again and threatens to undo the effects of military victory."

Now, I guess someone could claim that the above were untrue...but to throw a temper tantrum, as if it is totally assanine to say this...is utter nonsense. The statement above is clearly supportable...if not "mainstream"...no?

The title *should* be: Gingrich blasts Powell for failing to perform the impossible task of rehabilitating America's image after Bush, Rumsfeld and Co. got through with it.

I think the title shoud be: "Kosar erupts with frustration after continuous conservative victorys, goes back to attacking Newt"...

Just having fun man.

Doesn't really suprise me that much. Just compare the ideologies of each. Remember Newt and the Murdock book deal? New has always been a political power = entitlements kinda guy and was 'relieved' of command for practicing this with the book deal.

Colin Powell on the other hand is almost diametically opposed to this 'entitlement' agenda. He's been at odds with Rummy re the rebuilding of Iraq and who should be awarded the (entitlements) contracts. Powell is pushing for a major role for the United Nations in rebuilding Iraq whereas Rummy is pushing for U.S. (entitlements)having the lions share of the contracts AND appointing interim politicians.

Powell and Rummy are said to be so far apart on this that Powell may end up resigning if Rummy has his way.

It may be smart of us to let the rest of the world now have the problem called Iraq. Take our toys and go home. But then we mgiht not get what we really went there for. At this point in time nothing.

Except for Ironlocks posts(of course), I agree with what everybody has written. Ferdville, it looks like Newty still has at least *one* supporter..lol.

Ironlock,

I wasn't throwing a temper tantrum and of course Newt was correct when he spoke of 'diplomatic failure'. It's just hilarious who he chooses to blame for that.

Dork alert: the sooner you get rid of that cheesy avatar, the better off this forum will be. :)

I got your message this morning. I'll holla (for the less hip members here at madjacks forum, that means 'I will phone you soon').

....not trying to be a smartasz but.....anybody remember during the Bush campaign when he constantly critized the Clinton/Gore administration for 'nation building'? He was entirely against it and made it one of his sharpest attacks against the prior administration. Well....here we are with both Afghanistan and Iraq during just his first term. Since this is a betting forum.....anybody got any odds that this will be brought up during the next debate?

Will it still be considered a success if an anti-American government gets put in place. The people I see don't seem to be kissing us!

I think it is absurd to think that whatever government ends up in place there will be Pro-American. I think we will be lucky if they are not Anti-American. Will this project still be considered a success - a very interesting query. For the people of Iraq who no longer have Saddam to woory about, I would say yes. As for the balance, only time will tell.
