Mike Green will not play against the San Jose Sharks, Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau said, and the defenseman will undergo testing tonight. Boudreau said Green, who was struck in the head by a slap shot in the first period of Washington's 3-0 win over the Penguins Sunday and required several rows of stitches to close a cut near his right ear, was not diagnosed with a concussion.
After that game, Green said he felt woozy and Boudreau said the defenseman had headaches Sunday and Tuesday night. According to the Center for Disease Control, a concussion is a blow to the head resulting in symptoms that can include headaches, balance problems and dizziness.
"He felt fine, so I assume that he will be ready for practice and the game Saturday," Boudreau said. "With these things nowadays you just want to be overly cautious and there's still a lot of games and he's such an important factor [that] we don't want to lose him for any length of time."
According to a team spokesman, there is no official classification for Green's injury and he will undergo medical testing.
"No," Boudreau said when asked if Green was diagnosed with a concussion. "You get hit in the temple, you get cut there for a lot of stitches and you end up having headaches. No one ever said it was a concussion."
