Had a job offer retracked today

WTF. I got a decent offer emailed to me yesterday and I countered. Actually I asked if more money was possible. Today the company responded telling me why the amount of money that I countered for could not be done and went on to tell me "The fact is that we are retracking our original offer because we feel that you would not be a valuable employee for are company."

WTF. 24 hours ago I was. I am shocked. Believe me I would have accepted the original offer but I did not want to sell myself short.

Until now, everytime that I have had an offer I have always countered and something between me and company worked.

I will get off my soap box now.

Being persistent is a trait most people dont have today. If you showed them you dont take no for an answer it may impress. Certainly cant hurt you.

I can tell you first hand

I can tell you first hand

When I owned my own biz. I had 15+ employees and even when I was not hiring if someone came in or inquired and I told them I was not hiring if they stayed in touch and gave me reason to consider them even though I was fully staffed I hired a few people like that because they had drive.

I did reply to the human resources lady saying that for the record I would have accepted the original offer because I really needed a job. Oh well.

I'm kinda feeling "retracked"

Times are a little different. Today that staff would be 11 or 12.

Sorry to hear about the bad ju-ju man.

From the recruiting side - written offers are usually best and final. Any negotating should be done verbally, prior to the written offer being drafted.

If a candidate is bringing up negotiating points when the written is sent, it's seen as poor ettiquette - and sometimes even obnoxious, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I have seen/heard from people interviewing.

And the easiest way to get rid of that headache is to eliminate it and cut the candidate loose.

Or, something happened internally at the company and they decided the funding wasn't really there and you gave them a perfect chance to back out of it.

Just today I was interviewing someone - they hounded me and hounded me for an interview and kept telling me how perfect they were for us and how they only want to work for us.. and I finally gave in

First question:

Where, geographically, do you want to live & work.

Answer:
I'm open but I have my preferences.

I showed him the door and told him to come back in 6 months when he can make up his mind and be decisive and share info - I've got other ways to spend my time than play some shell game guessing what city someone wants to work in.

It's a competitive, cut throat job market out there right now folks. Places are hiring, but you better be a rock star and have your shit in a nice neat line and be ready to make decisions and play ball. Employers are looking for anything at all to get rid of someone and move on to find a better candidate at a better price with better skills.

It sucks that this happens, but it sounds like they called your bluff.

If you would have accepted the original offer, then once the offer is in writing a candidate should accept it.

This isn't home buying. When I make an offer to potential employees, it is what I feel we can afford to pay that person for their needed services. If they counter-offer, then I view that as a rejection of my offer. More than likely, my original offer is what I deem a workable solution.

Good luck on the job hunt. It's rough out there right now.

I've been looking for work since July so I guess I will keep lookin.

Actually I've stretched my search to the Nashville and Birmingham are.

Its really scary because I have only had 2 interviews in 3 months. Everyone is wanting to wait until after the first of the year to do anything.
