Home dogs continue to deliver
By Hank Goldberg

Taking home dogs is the trend of the moment. In the last two weeks, they are a 7-0-1 proposition. There are some opportunities this week.

In-depth game breakdowns
Since the opening day 33-0 drubbing at Buffalo, New England is 8-0-1 against the number. That's perfect! So why get off the Pats? They have a shortage of healthy wide receivers. Houston's Domanick Davis has 655 yards rushing, and Tony Banks threw for over 200 yards against Buffalo. New England gets a scare.

Arizona has lost two straight road games. Now the Cards are at home. The Rams have failed to cover nine of their last 10 on the road. This is their second straight and fourth of five traveling. The Cards have beaten Green Bay, Cincinnati, and San Fran at home, and have a running back in Marcel Shipp who can punish the Rams' defense.

The Bengals, after upsetting Kansas City to end the Chiefs' unbeaten run, should come up flat at lowly San Diego. Cincy was home for K.C. Now they're in California where they are zero for their last nine. In recent years, they are Bungles on the road at 5-23, and 2-7 as a favorite. LaDainian Tomlinson will run on the 25th-ranked run defense.

While the Seahawks are enjoying a share of first place in the NFC West, they are two for their last eight against the number, including three straight non-covers on the road. Baltimore's defense has given up 15 points per game in its last five at home.

San Francisco is zero for four on the road and travels to Green Bay off a Monday night game. Under coach Mike Sherman, the Pack is 13-2 at home in November and December. Green Bay's pass rush will be a challenge for Tim Rattay.

Carolina and Dallas figure to play a close, low-scoring game. The Panthers are 4-0 as a dog. Dallas has 31 points in its last four games, including two shutouts.

Early Picks: Baltimore -2?; Arizona +8
