South Carolina: Led by guard Tiffany Mitchel.. She is the little engine that can go. She does not always lead them in scoring but she makes it go. She can penetrate and dish, shoot the jumper, and everything you want from a guard. Behind her are 2 more guards that can score, when needed, if SC decides to go small. The place where SC gets you offensively is the size and depth of the bench. They start 3 girls 6' or taller and then have 6'4" Alaina Coates (double double machine) and 6'5" Ajia Wilson (Top Frosh in the nation) coming off the bench. South Carolina is long. They are very athletic.
The part I love about South Carolina is they defend you. Once you step off the bus there is someone from SC defending you. In the years past their offense was very prone to lapses on offense where they would go 3 to 5 minutes without scoring. That problem seems to have been solved this year. If the starters are scoring then the bench mob comes in and they score.
UCONN is UCONN- they score and they are good... But how good are they really? They lost to Stanford early in the season and since then they beat Notre Dame and Duke... But they have not played anyone else. Duke has been exposed lately so that win loses a little credibility, in my eyes. I know UCONN's ratings are off the charts but they play in a very weak conference and they do not get tested. How are they going to do when they play a group of women who Dawn Staley has coached and instilled grittiness and toughness into.
Do not get me wrong. I have so much respect for Breanna Stewart and Geno but I feel like this SC team is more athletic, better defending, and frankly more talented.
My biggest concern that this game is @ Gampel. Dawn says she may take the air out of the ball... Controlling the tempo is going to be key.
UCONN played 1 team to 16 and that was St. Johns @ St. Johns 70-54. Otherwise every game has been 30+ point differential. But the AAC is not he SEC.
