All-star left winger Dany Heatley suffered a separated right shoulder in Saturday's win over the Red Wings and will be lost to the Senators for up to six weeks.
Heatley was injured when he crashed into the end boards while trying to hit Dallas Drake.
"It's frustrating," said Heatley, who has played in all 207 games since being acquired by Ottawa in the summer of 2005. "It was kind of an unlucky play, but that's hockey."
Coach John Paddock said that without their back-to-back 50 goal scorer, the Senators will have to raise their level of defensive awareness.
"We're really going to have to play like we did last night," said Paddock, who is considering putting Ottawa native Randy Robitaille in Heatley's spot alongside Jason Spezza. "We have to be a better defensive team than we've been all season."
Paddock also said Martin Gerber will be in goal for tonight's game at Scotiabank Place against the New York Islanders.
