ESPN is reporting that Dany Heatley is in stable condition after crashing his Ferrari in a one-car crash. I guess he had a passenger that is also a Thrashers player although he wasn't identified. But whoever it is, he's in critical condition after suffering servere head injuries. The car was cut in half in the crash.

No reports if there was anything stupid involved like booze. The car was going over 80 mph, but I've driven that fast lots and lots of times on the freeway. Not sure if this was on the freeway or not.

I hope both of these guys come out of this OK. I got to know Dany pretty well when I was covering Wisconsin hockey for a newspaper the two seasons he was there. I just really hope it was just an accident and that he wasn't drunk or anything. But it's never good when you hear "servere head injuries."

ATLANTA -- Thrashers center Dan Snyder was critically injured in a car crash Monday night, and star right wing Dany Heatley broke his jaw in the accident.

The Thrashers said Tuesday that Snyder fractured his skull when Heatley's Ferrari crashed at about 10:30 p.m. Several sources reported that the crash occured in the tony Buckhead section of Atlanta.

According to the Associated Press, police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Ferrari hit a wall at about 80 mph, and that Snyder was ejected from the car, which was cut in half.

Snyder was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, and the team released a statement saying he would have surgery Tuesday morning for a depressed fracture in his skull.

Heatley was in stable condition with a broken left jaw, and WXIA-TV reported early Tuesday morning that he was conscious and talking

Heatley, who is 22 and was the NHL's 2001-02 rookie of the year, was driving the car.

Thrashers President Stan Kasten held a news conference about 3 a.m. at the hospital and said the team still was planning to hold a practice at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Kasten said he expected to inform the team at practice.

General manager Don Waddell and Snyder's parents were flying in from Toronto on Tuesday, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. The paper also reported that Waddell said team doctors William Whaley and Scott Gillogly were attending to the players at the hospital.

Snyder, who scored 10 goals and added four assists in 36 games for Atlanta last season, had surgery on his ankle earlier this month before the start of training camp. He was expected to start the season on the injured list.

The 25-year-old player signed with the Thrashers as a free agent in 1999 after playing four seasons of junior hockey for Owen Sound in the Ontario Hockey League.

He spent most of his first two professional seasons in the minor leagues, helping Orlando win the International Hockey League title in 2000-01 and playing on the Chicago Wolves' American Hockey League championship team in 2001-02. He played 35 games for Chicago last season, scoring 11 goals and adding 12 assists.

The 22-year-old Heatley, the NHL rookie of the year in 2001-02, led Atlanta in scoring last season with a team-record 41 goals and 48 assists, and is the Thrashers' career scoring leader with 155 points. He scored four goals in the 2003 All-Star game and was selected the MVP. The former University of Wisconsin player was the second overall pick in the 2000 draft.

The Thrashers last played on Saturday night, with Heatley scoring an overtime goal in a 3-2 exhibition victory over Nashville in Richmond, Va.

Atlanta is scheduled to play Florida at home on Wednesday night and complete its preseason schedule Friday night at home against Nashville. The Thrashers' first regular-season game is next Thursday night against Columbus.

What a shame. Heatley apparently has been charged with "reckless driving" and "serious injury by vehicle" because a passenger was injured. I hope everything went as well and as smooth as can be for Snyder.

Heatley, Snyder in traffic accident
This is part of the report on TSN.

According to reports out of Atlanta, Heatley was driving his black Ferrari in the Buckhead section of the city when he struck a wall near a condominium complex at around 10:30 pm while travelling 130 kilometres an hour. The pair were returning from a season ticket holder function just prior to the accident.

Snyder, 25, was thrown from the vehicle, which was cut in half by the impact of the crash. He is in critical condition after undergoing surgery for a depressed skull fracture and a crushed portion of the skull.

Heatley, 22, is in stable condition with a broken jaw.

Heatley has received five seperate charges resulting from the accident, the most serious of which is 'serious injury by a vehicle' - a felony. If convicted of this, Heatley faces between one and 15 years in prison. He also received four misdemeanor charges: wreckless driving, driving too fast for conditions, driving on the wrong side of the road and striking a fixed object.
Heatley was required to give blood samples to be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard practice for accidents of this nature.

I just read that there was a very small amount of alcohol in Dany's system but, from what I heard, it was well below the legal limit and not considered a cause, nor will any alcohol-related charges be pursued.

After seeing those pics, I can't imagine surviving an accident that leaves a car looking like that.
