UD set for rematch of Nov. 12

Delaware has the odd experience tonight of playing a men?s basketball opponent for the second time this season before the Colonial Athletic season starts.

The Blue Hens hope the rematch is a repeat of their first duel with Penn, an 84-69 victory Nov. 12 in Charlottesville, Va., in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-off.

The Quakers come to the Carpenter Center for a 7 p.m. tip, as Delaware tries to benefit from a run of recent rough tests against high-level foes. The 3-8 Hens have lost to Kansas State, Pitt, Temple, Duke and Villanova in recent weeks and relish the chance to play a fellow mid-major.

Penn is the third nonconference foe Delaware has faced twice in a season since 1970-71, the others being Boston University in 1990-91 and Marist in 2008-09.

Delaware has lost its final game before Christmas the last four years, including two years ago at home against Penn. As a result, coach Monte Ross said the theme this week has been ?We want to leave together. We don?t need somebody to be halfway home and checked out halfway through the game.

?They understand a good team takes care of business and play the way you?re capable of playing,? Ross added. ?One of our biggest keys in this game is our approach, a sense of urgency to get back on the right track. They?re going to be coming in here loaded for bear, and we have to be ready.?

Delaware outrebounded Penn 47-24 and led by 24 points before the Quakers got within nine late. It was just the fifth time in 23 encounters Delaware downed Penn, and its largest margin of victory since 1967-68.

One of their more balanced efforts keyed the Hens, who upset Virginia 24 hours later. Devon Saddler scored 19 points, Josh Brinkley supplied 15, Terrell Rogers 14, Jarvis Threatt 12 and Carl Baptiste nine. Jamelle Hagins fouled out after playing just 16 minutes.

The Delaware defeat has been the most lopsided this season for Penn (2-7), which is playing its first game since a 68-55 loss to Villanova on Dec. 8. The Hens are coming off a 75-65 setback at Villanova on Sunday.

Feature players for Penn coach Jerome Allen are 6-foot-8 junior forward Fran Dougherty (15.4 ppg/8.8 rpg) and 6-3 junior guard Miles Cartwright (14.3 ppg). A 31.1 percentage beyond the 3-point arc, from which Penn loves to launch, has undermined the Quakers but is evidence of their inexperience.
