Mercury in Minnesota Town Plummets to Record Low
Monday, February 11, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS ? It lived up to its name: The temperature in International Falls fell to 40 below zero Monday, just a few days after the northern Minnesota town won a federal trademark making it officially the "Icebox of the Nation."

It was so cold that resident Nick McDougall couldn't even get his car trunk lid to close after he got out his charger to kick-start his dead battery. By late morning, the temperature had risen all the way to 18 ? below zero.

"This is about as cold as it gets, this is bad. There's no wind ? it's just cold," said McDougall, 48, a worker at The Fisherman, a convenience store and gas station in the town on the Canadian border. "People just don't go out, unless you have to go to work."

Like many Minnesota residents, he uses an electric engine block heater to keep his car from freezing.

"You plug in your car, for sure, and you put the car in the garage if you can," McDougall said. His garage is full of other things, so he had to park outside ? a "big mistake."

The previous record low for Feb. 11 in International Falls was 37 below, set in 1967, said meteorologist Mike Stewart at the weather service in Duluth. The cold was expected, he said: "When the winds finally died off and the skies cleared off, it just dropped."

Although I grow fairly acclamated to the normal cold weather here, this weekend was very tough to take. I just feel awful today. Was out in the wind and cold several times both Saturday and Sunday, and of course had to drive in to work today.

I think the temp in my town was definitely 16 below on Sunday morning, and the wind was really rough. Wind chills steadily from -20 to -40 all weekend until late yesterday. A little snow, plus snow blowing around made conditions serious. We hosted a basketball tourney (thankfully we hosted and didn't have to travel out of town) Saturday and had to come and go and run errands. Also dogsitting a friends German Shepard who likes to get outside when he can, and had to take both dogs out a few times.

It's officially cabin fever time here in the hinterlands. The price we pay for wonderful summers...and payment came due this week.

Wife and I are heading for Hawai in early March - sounds so wonderful right now.

This weekend got the best of me, for sure. The main reason I opted not to jump in the fray the past couple of days in the forum here...just in a horrible mood and would lash out, no doubt.

On the upside today, the wind has died down, saw a little sun, and the temps are not as cold. I think we almost got up to double digits, but never went outside after I came to work.

Tough times for the stupidly hearty up here. :mj08:
