Monk, I know some folks that have got the chance to watch them scrimmage this fall, and this is what they have seen. They are very reliable as good as my Husker people.
The Oompa Loompas, Anna Nicole Smith, Jim Hurley, Gary Coleman, Eminem and The Psychic Friends Network also helped me out here...
As we suspect, their defense is going to be very good.
They have all-league caliber players at all four secondary positions. In addition, their nickel and dime guys could start anywhere else and easily are the best collection of DB's in the Big 12 and probably the nation.
They say that Lance Mitchell is the spitting image of Torrance Marshall. Not good for opposing Big 12 offenses. Their whole secondary is very, very atheltic and run like criminals with cops chasing them.
DT Tommie Harris has not looked very impressive so far, remains to be seen what his problem is.
DT Lynn Magruder (Tennessee transfer) while he looks like a specimen, has not been impressive but it should be noted that he has been hampered by injuries.
They are really gonna miss Roy Williams. Eric Bassey is not even close in ability.
They got some left footed kicker named DiCarlo who will probably win the job. Kicking is gonna be a REAL weak spot for them this year. Punter Blake Ferguson sucks a big one.
Offense:
Their best player hands down is TE Trent Smith. He is hard to cover and a definite go to guy.
RB Quentin Griffin is very explosive and a solid.
Beyond their starting five OL, they are not very good. There is a big difference in size and ability particularly in Jammal Brown and Wes Sims and their respective backups.
QB Jason White is definitely the starter. He has not looked quite 100 % yet. Neither White or Hybl have thrown the ball well, and have missed a lot of balls to wide open receivers. If OU has aspirations of being in Tempe, this play must improve quickly.
Bottom line: If OU is going to get it done, they better mask their defencies at kicking and their lack of depth on the offensive line. The offense is also learning a brand new scheme under Kevin Wilson so that could be a factor, but don't look for them to put up a ton of points again on offense this year, and they could be as inept as they were last year on offense. Their Defense will definitely have to lead the way. I see them going 10-2 and contending for a BCS berth. I think this is Texas' year. We will see.
