i think box was a hight school or college coach...or any other coaches out here at madjacks...ive got a simple question..we see this all the time....and especially in the tourney with so many close games decided by 3 pts.....why dont teams FOUL when they are up 3 under 10 sec. left.....xavier game is a perfect example.....have your smartest player foul /hack the guy when theyre dribbbling up floor?? most teams shot 35-40% from 3-point range, why would u ever let a team have a 40% chance to tie the game?
u foul then they make 1 and intentional miss 2nd then have to get a miracle tip in to tie you....seems pretty simple to me...odds are def. in your favor to foul...

if im sean miller i sure wish i woulda fouled them...im pissed because had xavier on money line..they did get jobbed with the no-call on odens flagrant foul at end....but hey they shoulda hit their free throws...up 9 with 3mins to go u should win game...

anyway any input as to why coaches dont ever use this strategy????

thanks burgh.

my 2 cents as a coach, I dont like fouling as much as teaching the kids how to play what we call "X" defense, meaning all 5 guys outside the 3-pt arc, no one allowed to play inside it and show them how to switch ... in HS we work on this esp. when time to go to State etc ... I dont like fouling so much bc you can foul opps shooting a trey if they are cagey at times, and they can make one FT and miss one and you can even lose should they hit a trey on backside ...

Ive put a ton of thought and time in on this thru many years of coaching and come to conclusion to show kids how to guard the trey line properly, we have never allowed a trey to beat us or go into OT using this method ...

What the X-men did wrong was not switch and kept 3 men inside the arc, many CBB teams appear to have never tinkered with this concept of keeping all 5 outside the arc and jumpswitching dribble screens, which is what popped OSU open for the tying shot

amazing game nonetheless
