holmes is fifty one and butterbean weighs almost as much as anna nicole smith....:D ...no odds posted on this one at olympic.
maybe they could put up odds on a potential coronary....all kidding aside,10 rounds almost seems to cruel(and dangerous)for these guys....should be a hoot...i feel sorry for holmes, but i hope he makes a few bucks...they`re both talking shit to try and hype this chinese fire drill and con $19.99 out of as many of us as possible....comments,insults,stats,insults and predictions welcome.

odds are steep

holmes will almost certainly assume a position on the ropes...can butterbean throw punches for 10 rounds or collapse at some point?i certainly could not lay that wood with a 51 year old ......larry`s head always looked to little for his body....sort of beetlejuice-like....am i the only one?

When this fight was first announced, I would have bet my house on Holmes. I don't care if Holmes has one foot in an old folks home, Bean hasn't really ever beaten a legitimate boxer. The one time he fought an actual boxer he got clobbered (can't remember the guys name, sorry) and every time he has fought a guy with any boxing ability he has had problems. Some of you younger guys might have forgotten just how good Holmes was and how great his jab was. I know "was" is not an operative word in boxing, but we are talking Butterbean. But I have heard the Bean has lost about 75 pounds and has actually been working hard for once in his life. I doubt if Holmes has been doing the same, so I would not likely lay 600 here. But there is no way I would take Bean. If Holmes has any self-respect whatsoever, this is an embarrassing beating.

On the lake. Setting hooks!
Ferdville,
I remember how good Holmes was. He ranks in my top 5 heavyweights of all time. He was then and still is underrated. No doubt in my mind he would have beat alot of the past great heavyweights. And the ones of today. He had great jab and plain out knew how to fight. As far as the fight with fatboy coming up. Who knows. My god he's 51. Wouldn't suprise me if Holmes won. I wish Holmes hadn't taken it. I hope he dont need the money. But I can't think of any other reason for it.

Not that this has to be continued but click here for a shot of Larry Holmes head size in relation to other former champs.

I'm afraid Butterbean is going to think it's a peanut and try to eat it.

Joking aside, I really like Larry Holmes. I'd hate to see him get hurt in this fight. He's a good guy, good businessman, good fighter.

This here's an interview with him where he talks about a lot of other fighters and what not.

Butterbean has always looked like one of those for-fun sumo wrestling costumes. I always expect him to start eating the turnbuckle.

p.s.

p.s.

also a big larry holmes fan.....not a big ali fan....would have liked holmes in his prime over ali(holmes fought 3 minutes of every round, ali fought the last 30 seconds in a lot of fights).i know that`s sacrilege, but i think ali fought in a weak heavyweight era....also,remember how bad ruiz` nose looked after the last holifield fight....johnson has a better jab than holifield and i really believe ruiz bleeds alot in this fight.

The Bean's chances for a victory end after round three. Holmes may be a geriatric but he should still be elusive enough to avoid getting cold-cocked. I'd like to see Butterbean drop Holmes. It's embarassing how some of these legends like Holmes and Duran feel the need to try and relive their glory days.

Gardenweasel -- as for Ali fighting in a weak heavyweight era, I take it that was meant to be taken with a heavy dose of sarcasm (Liston, Foreman, Frazier, Norton...c'mon).

ps. whatever happened to the supposed matchup with Big George and Holmes? That might have been worth the $19.99

there were some decent heavyweights,but

there were some decent heavyweights,but

i think a large part of ali`s mystique was attributable to the social climate of the times....i also think ali contributed to many of the worst aspects of boxing...the taunting, the hotdogging, the premise that you can lay on the ropes for 2 and a half minutes of a round,do nothing, throw a couple flurries at the end of a round and win the round....rope a dope was just that-dopey.....i think the guy got away with to much b.s. in the ring because of who he was .......pulling guys heads down...excessive clinching.....i believe that if a guy forces a fight for 2 to 2.5 minutes of a round, punching arms, body, whatever,he deserves to win the round. ...he did the work ....may be a partial reason why there are so many bad decisions today.........ali`s fights with frazier were classics(and i love joe frazier-a real warrior)but, the truth is frazier was extremely limited....he was a very small guy who was a one handed fighter....fighting today he would have been blown out vs the bowe`s,the lewis, and yes, even the tua`s and the tyson`s(in his prime)......i have watched the old fights and am amazed how limited the quarry`s,bonavena`s,wepner`s,chuvalo`s and the like really were....i`m not saying ali doesn`t deserve to be considered great(and he was for his times),but, the greatest of all time?no way.

That's a great Pic.

Sounds like the Botha-Etienne fight was better than the one I watched.

The Austin fight was great. The are some good fights possible in the under 130 range.

I think Johnson could have beaten Ruiz if he kept circling and jabbing, even though I had the first round 10-8. After the second low, blow he was in trouble, though. Johnson was successful with keeping Ruiz on the end of his jab when he was circling, but he kept letting Ruiz rush him. That's when he got into trouble with the low blows.

Early leans on Vargas and Moorer in the upcoming bouts.

Even though he lost, I really liked Vargas against Trinidad. More on that in another thread.
