Holy crap.......need some quick help from fellow madjackers :)

A while back my mother gave me these "plates" .........well I was cleaning out closet today (trying to find something else) and pulled out this huge box filled with these plates.

Well........wanted to know what they were worth......so I logged on to net to check em out..........

Well I did some checking and found some of the plates were worth around 100 bucks........was happy.........then I looked up a plate from 1971.......and it was listed at 600 bucks.....and there were 5 in the box..........HOLY CRAP

so all this time theses plates were sitting in closet and this box is worth thousands

so here's my question............where the hell do I sell em...do I go to an antique store??? Pawn shop?? I have no clue........somebody out there has to know

MJ Hummel Annual Plates..........all years from 1971 onward....the real valueable one seems to be the 1971 model........

can anybody help me:shrug:

and to think I thought they might be worth 50 bucks :D :D

.........I'm gonna have myself a nice little bankroll :p

You could always look to see if the "Antique Roadshow" is coming near you or find a hummel dealer and pay a few bones to have all of them appraised. If you have a digital camera you can take pictures and send them off. Here is a link to the more reputable auction houses, that is the way you would want to sell. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow/series/houses.html

Reason I say this is because I bought an antique dresser from from somebody who was managing an estate sale for a family member who had passed. I bought it for $150 - it was in good shape but it smelled a bit moldy and I wanted to use it for my clothes. As I was cleaning it out I found a hand crafted copper letter opener dating back to the early 1800's (freaking thing is about a foot long). My mother is an antique freak so I sent her pictures and she went to her sources and she reported it was worth alot more than I paid. Don't short yourself, have a pro check them out.

Hold on a minute..

Hold on a minute..

Very thin market....check ebay results for comparable.....10 years
ago before ebay I stumbled into a large collection of "Frankoma"
many cataloged 50-100 a pop...started looking into Tahiti property. After much correspondense with antique dealers on east and west coast, collectors in trade publications, dragging samples to major antique shows, I finally unloaded them to a flea market dealer for $2.00 a pop..

Hopefully you fare much better...

I've got the same set, you should have 25 plates in all. If they are still in their boxes they are worth more. Not to disappoint you, but looking at price guides is not realistic anymore. The best way to get accurate prices is to go to ebay and do a search on hummel plates. This will give you an idea what people are willing to pay. They don't eat much, I would hang on to them.

These are only worth what the next collector is willing to pay.
Remember he may want to make a proffit. If you believe one is worth say 300 bucks. Get ready to sell for 250 bucks. Unless you have to sell don't.
With some luck if you have time. Hold them longer. You may get as much as 5% to 7% increase per year. That increase you can measure on what someone will buy plate today. Also keep in mind if you find some one who may need just one plate to complete a set. Then you have a chance to get full value. On the other hand if you have complete set. Dont be in a hurry to break that set up.

I love ebay. I've sold over 2K worth of Baseball cards and stuff I collected as a child there. Look at it like this: the stuff can sit in your basement forever or you could get a couple hundered dollars for them by selling them. If they have no sentelmental value SELL ! If your Dad gave them to you on his death bed and they mean something to you then there is no price high enough. If not then sell and buy something you want with the money. If you have ebay questions I can help but its pretty easy to figure out yourself. :)

well I sold em.....sold em all :D

did tons of research..........and now I know everything about Hummel plates.....let me tell ya:D

anyway..........if anybody in Southern Ontario wants to sell some collectibles let me know........I contacted a ton of dealers and ran into this guy that lived 3 minutes from me....how funny is that...all the phone calls.....all the research and he lives almost next door :D

anyway...........he came over...........showed him the stuff.......he pulled out this huge wad of cash (probably to intimidate me!!) and we talked bussiness............he of course went "real low" then I went "real high".........I then put him in a choke hold...ok well not really......

was kind of fun haggling over plates that were sitting in the basement that I thought were worth 50 bucks at most......well he paid me in cash (hope it's not counterfit.....LOL!) and I'm one happy dude :)

so if any madjackers who want to sell an antique want this guys name just ask madjack for my e-mail and I'll send it to ya.......

also....thanks to the madjackers for your help :p

and remember.......look in the basement......ya never know what your going to find..............

now........time to get some hookers..........well ok.....guess I should be a good son and give some cash to mommy....she did give em to me.......she deserves some cash..........man....I'm so thoughtful
